We all belong to nature, it does not belong to us. We are a part of it, we are reliant on its good health as an extension of our bodies. Let us treat it well and be good stewards. For ourselves, and those to come.

@drghadasasa Eventually, after many 1000s of years. This is different, because these pines are not suited to the climate, and one that is warming. Phragmites and garlic mustard for example do not drop off and stabilize, they take over, very present ecological emergency.

From a biologist standpoint, on the occasion that invasive species succeed, their numbers skyrocket, but suddenly drop and stabilize as all the organisms around them evolve.

Israelis overtly selected the pines for their ability to colonize Palestine quickly. They shed needles that acidified the soil, killing local flora & fauna. It's just that the pines died relatively quickly too. Invasive species are not only introduced but wreak havoc on societies & ecologies.

@drghadasasa great thread. i do have a question, if you don't mind. how are these trees considered invasive if they're not particularly suited to the climate? I had assumed outcompeting native species was definitional of invasiveness

@drghadasasa Solar farms as well crowd out the sun for vulnerable plant species, specifically bad in the desert climates where things do not grow back in one human lifetime.

Love this question & the replies are really illuminating, so please keep commenting. Myself, I am still learning about other cases of green colonialism, such as in Norway, where wind farms are being built on the lands of the Indigenous Saami people.

@drghadasasa If i may ask, is there any other examples of "green colonialism" . At least as a intentional strategy. Since a good % colonialism is usually more.. extraction based right?

An amazing piece of truth in Haaretz this morning: the European pine trees Ashkenazi settlers planted over the ruins of Palestine's villages are dying en masse throughout occupied Palestine, 'and no one knows exactly why'. But it is obvious why: they are not native, and they were used as weapons of war and ethnic cleansing. The very soil rejects repugnant Zionism. The land itself, no less. This could be the most ominous signal Zionists have ever received. And they have received plenty. It feels like a divine warning

It feels like my heart has been ripped out of my chest. I had a dream that the woods I spent much of my childhood in were being destroyed so they could build a christian church.

@BenjaminPDixon 100% and I'm glad we have the same analysis, Rome was the super-colonizer of the ancient world.

Nah.... Don't let Rome off like that. Jesus was a direct threat to Rome's core philosophies. The Sanhedrin Council were Rome's agents. And we are currently living under Rome's colonization of Christianity.
