The problem is to get to anywhere close to the speed of light, we need exponentially more energy. 3. Chemical rockets will just not work. Even fusion rockets won't work. Even 10% of the speed of light is not achievable. The Tsiolkovsky Rocket Equation prevents it. 4. Interstellar dust becomes hand grenades when traveling anywhere close to the speed of light. Ships break. 5. Space radiation will kill us over the time need to travel interstellar distances. In 100 years once the moon and mars are colonized, who knows that the state of propulsion will look like. Maybe we'll have some sort of fusion or reactionless technology. Then it becomes a matter of delta V, life support systems and social engineering to permit multi-generational ships.

Basta con ‘sta roba del “bisogna far giocare gli italiani” ripetuta all’infinito ogni volta che ci tocca un fallimento. Non bisogna far giocare gli italiani a caso, bisogna far giocare quelli all'altezza. Altrimenti avremo certamente una Serie A "più italiana", ma ancora più scadente. Tra obbligo all'utilizzo (inutile) e obbligo alla formazione (doveroso) c'è un'enorme differenza.

ESA is moving the entire Sentinel satellite archive to a new data format. The USGS is benchmarking the Landsat archive to follow suit. The legacy standard for this kind of data is the Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF. COGs are single files containing 2D rasters like imagery or elevation data. They integrate seamlessly with almost every existing mapping tool using binary TIFF tags. The new challenger is Zarr. Developers built Zarr specifically for massive, multidimensional data cubes like climate models and satellite time series. Zarr chunks arrays into a directory of separate files and stores them in the cloud using human-readable JSON metadata. Many developers assume Zarr will completely replace the COG. Look closely at the actual bytes, and you'll see they aren't fundamentally different. If you encode a raster with the exact same compression and tiling scheme, the raw data inside a Zarr chunk and a COG tile are completely identical. The friction between the two originates entirely from software libraries like rasterio and zarr-python. Zarr recently introduced a sharding codec that packs multiple chunks into a single file. That structure exactly mirrors how a COG already works. Researchers took advantage of this architectural overlap and embedded a Zarr shard index directly into a valid COG. That single hybrid file works perfectly in both ecosystems. You can open it as a standard COG using GDAL. You can also open the exact same file as a multidimensional Zarr array using xarray. You don't have to choose between compatibility and dimensional flexibility. The industry focus is shifting toward optimising storage and access for ever-growing archives. The critical variables involve finding the best chunk sizes, selecting the right compression filters, and standardising metadata. Forcing a total migration to Zarr ignores the deep integration of the COG across thousands of existing systems. A better path involves modernising both formats simultaneously. Building shared tools allows the community to leverage Zarr for multidimensional data cubes while keeping the COG as the gold standard for 2D rasters.
