(2) Diversify the LGBTQ+ storylines. For example, New York had a thriving drag scene in the 1880s, including huge drag balls (hat tip: @GeorgeChauncey1 and his amazing book Gay New York).

I finished watching the #GildedAge recently and here's what I want to happen in Season 2 {a thread}: (1) Bring in Asian American history through the Chinese railroad workers. George Russell owns a railroad line and Chinese immigrant workers built the bulk of America's railroads.

In 1892, actor Chu Fong opened the Chinese Opera House in New York, the first Chinese language theater outside of San Fran. Would love to see a story about these early Chinese entrepreneurs and the emergence of chop suey and stir fry as a popular dish.

With respect to #1, I would love to see the formation of Chinatown, which happened in the 1870s/80s, with Chinese immigrant laborers opening up the city's best laundry shops. And, in 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act is passed.

My first @wabenews food series called Atlanta's Savory Stories came out today about Atlanta's Chinese-American cuisine, including the amazing historic Chinese-American entrepreneur, Joe Jung. #aapihistory wabe.org/atlantas-savor…

You know the phrase, “Atlanta influences everything.” This story contextualizes that in terms of the city’s restaurants helping to fuel social justice movements and the leaders over the decades. A story 2 years in the making for @MichaelBJordan, and I do hope you read it

Atlanta’s not just the backdrop for many American social movements, it’s an epicenter, and so are the city’s restaurants atlanta.eater.com/2022/3/24/2299…

We spend a lot time talking about what’s new and shiny in food, but we shouldn’t forget the impact and importance of institutions that came before us and this retrospective from @unexpectedATL on B.B Beamon and his restaurant on Auburn Avenue still resonates

@unexpectedATL Hi! I sent in a tour request on 1/18 but haven’t heard back from anyone. Do you have an email I can follow up at? We’re excited to get a tour scheduled and I didn’t see a contact email on your site! Thank you.

@attucksadams To this point, our Juneteenth virtual experience took about 500 hours of research. A great tour takes a ton of time to do right. It’s not just the historic research (which is from original source material) but cultivating so it makes sense.

Friday made. A dear friend in the hospital is being discharged to continue recovering at home and I just had the most amazing conversation about Atlanta food history with a culinary historian here. This is the energy I needed today.

@TheLazySusan There is so much potential in this area. South Broad was the original food market location in the city and it would be wonderful to bring back that vibrancy

Thanks to those who rec'd speaking to Kyle Kessler on the history of South Downtown. His insights and knowledge on the history of the district were an invaluable part of the reporting for this atlanta.eater.com/2021/6/9/22524…

@TheLazySusan @AnjaliEnjeti I would like to add to this that Helen is the only place I know of that has a fried cheese restaurant and that, in itself, is reason for an article.

@TheLazySusan Kyle Kessler is a really good source. I've done a ton of research on South Downtown on the food aspects, so I can tell you a lot about the warehousing/food storage/markets there. All of the original markets were in S Downtown.
