Rapid Reaction || 2-1 Loss (MTL):
WOW, OH WOW!
I loved the game; I loved the physicality. I know we lacked offensive pop early on & I know we literally handed the Habs home ice advantage...I know.
I know, I know, I know.
Seriously though, just like every player in that Lightning locker room, just like every member of that coaching staff, I'm super confident in our ability to win regardless of who we play or where we play.
To me, and I'm assuming to the Bolts, tonight was more about sending a message than winning the game. It's game 79 & we're clinched...who cares?!
Sure, it would've been nice to win the game. You could tell in that 3rd period the Lightning really wanted to win it.
But objective #1 wasn't to secure the points, objective #1 was to establish dominance, stay healthy, & practice disciplined habits.
So in the loss, in the frustration, there are many things to walk away happy about tonight. I'll name 2:
1) Vasilevskiy is dialed. He looks like prime 2020/2021 Vasilevskiy...we need him like that. If you want to nitpick what changed from those 3 cup runs to these past 3 first round exits, it's Vasilevskiy. He hasn't been as sharp the past 3 years. This year...he's back. That will be a game changer in a series & he put his brilliance on display tonight.
2) The saying "defense wins championship" is overused because it's true.
In playoffs, one of the most crucial aspects of winning teams is an elite PK. IMO, it's more important than a power play — far more important. Sure, we don't want to take penalties, but how many of the penalties tonight were actual penalties? 5 of the 7 chances MTL got came from post-whistle scrums which happens in the playoffs, too.
You cannot control if the refs will also suck in the playoffs, but you can control how you defend when you're shorthanded. The Bolts showed they have that elite PK needed for a deep run.
—————————————————————
The list could continue. I loved the snarl from this group and I'm not sweating the loss; it's all good.
With all the positivity & optimism, I will acknowledge the way we lost this game really sucks as a fan. MAN, we battled so hard to score & we finally broke through! To lose off a mental lapse like that is just terribly disappointing...my jaw is still on the floor...that is just terrible...terrible, terrible, terrible.
Not only that but also the mental lapse that allowed a situation like Montreal's 2nd goal to happen is exactly the OPPOSITE of "practice disciplined habits"...
So yeah, it sucks. But, THANK GOD that happens now instead of post-April-18th.
In all the emotion, I just keep reminding myself: this game doesn't matter. Good for Montreal. Let them have it. We learned another valuable lesson without having to deal with actual consequences; it's worth it.
When the puck drops on April 18th, the series will be 0-0. That is all that matters.
Keep the faith, Bolts Nation.

@LawlerDani13667 @chomakovg Well then you shouldn’t be making your own financial decisions
The point is you probably have closer to a 50% chance of completing it, in which case the expected value is $2.5mm vs $100k
English

@valuehund @chomakovg That doesn’t make any sense. It’s 0 or 5 million. Id much rather have a guaranteed 100k than a 97 percent shot of nothing

CONTEXT:
Habs & Bolts fighting after every whistle, & the Lightning are COMPLETELY UNBOTHERED.
Essentially, the Bolts are saying we will beat you up and wear you down & not react at all to whatever you throw at us.
It’s confidence; it’s swagger.
This is championship-level composure.

In case you were wondering what unfazed looks like… Nikita Kucherov has one mission: Lord Stanley.

@TOSportsAdam @use1235566 He did it in the playoffs as a rookie in 2021

Can he do it in the playoffs tho? Probably not.

Yall did this with Fucale, Primeau, (not really with Lindgren tbf), Montembeault and now Dobes
When Dobes’ purple patch ends, please don’t do the same thing to Fowler

We’re witnessing a rookie goalie turning into a confident #1 NHL goalie who’s going to take the torch from Price and carry it for this team for a long time.

10 years straight of playoffs. Hate them or love them, everyone can agree the Leafs have been the most successful franchise in the last decade.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since 2016.
