Did you know Persian is a gender-neutral language? Possibly the only one still widely spoken this way today. It’s the language we (Iranians) think in, which has shaped our way of thinking.

@Empty_America @UfoHitch Because the Catholic Chruch should know which side its bread is buttered on. Most of their funding comes from the US, and tbh most of the world’s devout Catholics hail from the US too

Why would any sane person expect the leader of the Global Church to cater to the preferences of American Nationalists? What is the logic chain that leads you to have that expectation?
Nick Freiling@NickFreiling

There will not again be a Pope that modern American conservatives like. It won't happen. American conservatives have developed a general disdain for the rest of the world – for all things not American. Their foreign policy is driven mainly by aesthetic preference, seeing the world as a consumer good (thus the rage about high rates of immigration into Europe). And of course, their party's presidents are seemingly addicted to waging war on Muslims. The Church's mission runs exactly counter to this. Conservatives will say they long for a Pope like John Paul II, but the truth is that they would have rejected even him. It is they who have changed – not the Church, and not the truth. Here's John Paul II 👇 "War is a defeat for humanity. War should belong to the tragic past, to history: it should find no place on humanity's agenda for the future." "It is my ardent hope that Muslim and Christian religious leaders and teachers will present our two great religious communities as communities in respectful dialogue, never more as communities in conflict." "In the West ... liberal capitalism ... has proposed and still promotes, on the economic level, antithetical forms of the organization of labor and of the structures of ownership, especially with regard to the so-called means of production."

I feel compelled to return to this argument once more to dispel what I believe is a significant myth regarding Pope Leo XIV. Compared with all other 12 popes of the post-1870 era, beginning with his namesake Leo XIII, the current Pope is far from a political or even religious 'left-wing extremist'. If you do not believe me, believe their written records. Benedict XV, the pope who denounced Socialism as 'the enemy of the Church', also instituted the International Catholic Day for Migrants and Refugees, consistently condemned the First World War from the moment of his election, and coined the famous definition of WWI as 'the useless slaughter' in his international exhortation to all belligerent sides of 1st August 1917. Pius X, recognised as the foremost anti-modernist and intransigent conservative among modern popes, condemned Italy's exploitation of religion in the war against Turkey, and wrote the encyclical Lacrimabili Statu denouncing the violent mistreatment of South American indigenous populations by their governments. Pius XI, a deeply underrated figure, whilst bitterly opposing communism and socialism, openly attacked Nazi racial ideology in Mit Brennender Sorge , and at his personal request the Congregation for Seminaries and Universities issued on 13th April 1938 the Syllabus against Racism , distributed to Catholic schools worldwide, the timing of which, falling precisely during Hitler's state visit to Rome, was hardly accidental. He also opposed rearmament and war consistently. All this notwithstanding the fact that Pius XI personally harboured traditional Catholic prejudices and had initially sought an accommodation with Hitler upon his coming to power in 1933. Pius XII remains perhaps the most problematic of recent popes, owing to his failure to condemn Nazism and the Holocaust with sufficient strength and clarity — a failing serious enough to halt and restart his canonisation process on several occasions. And yet even he consistently condemned war and the concept of armed aggression. And one need hardly dwell on John XXIII ; Mater et Magistra on workers' rights and social justice, Pacem in Terris on the repudiation of war, or on John Paul II. Even Paul VI, a reserved, traditional and extraordinarily cautious figure, penned "Populorum Progressio", acknowledging the right of poor nations to development and emancipation, and explicitly condemning the concept of private property as an unconditional right when others lack bare necessities. So there is nothing extreme in what Leo XIV has said over the past few days. It is, once again, the continuation of Catholic doctrine as it has evolved over the past two centuries. What has changed is not the Church. It is the world around it that has shifted so far in one direction that the mere desire for peace, the condemnation of violence and abuse, and the refusal to allow religion to be exploited for political ends are now labelled 'dangerous extremism'.

A rare instance of appreciating an artist, Gottfried Kumpf (1920-2022) for his name as much as his work. In his lifetime, Kumpf's paintings were considered naive but since his death, they are becoming increasingly desirable.
