Well, I was thinking of going with my daughters back home in Dahiyeh or maybe to our newly-built home in Khiam which took us 8 years to finish. I then thought about whether it would be safe for us native humans of Muslim faith to go there, especially ones who would definitely be followed and surveilled by an Israeli Zionist drone that targets civilian cars. I then remembered that the Israelis already took down my Dahiyeh home with US-made munition and they burnt down the Khiam one with white phosphorus with Canadian (and other western) tax payers' money. This mental calculation is happening in Beirut, Lebanon in 2024 as the world watches in silence after a 1 year and 2 months continuous genocide in #Gaza too. But then I found my daughters curled up with their pet cat in the corner trying to calm one another down because Israel was dropping bunker buster bombs 1 km away from our "refuge" house killing other Lebanese people's Muslim young daughters. Say what now @GadSaad?

So Israeli soccer fans went to Amsterdam, tore down Palestinian flags off Dutch buildings, chanted for the killing of Arabs, and then got attacked as a result. But if you google ‘Amsterdam’ you’ll see a bunch of headlines about Israelis being targeted in unprovoked attacks.

Turkish authorities banned a screening of Luca Guadagnino’s QUEER, which was set to open MUBI Fest İstanbul. (The reason: “contains provocative content that will endanger public peace.”) In response, MUBI has canceled the entire festival.

Kararda filmin, toplum barışını tehlikeye atacak provokatif içerik taşıdığı gerekçesiyle yasaklandığı ve yasak kararının güvenlik nedeniyle uygulanacağı belirtiliyor. Bu yasak kararının, sanatı ve ifade özgürlüğünü kısıtlayan bir müdahale olduğuna inanıyoruz. Festivaller, sanatın ve kültürel çeşitliliğin kutlandığı, insanları bir araya getiren nefes alma alanlarıdır. Bu yasaklama, yalnızca bir filmi değil, tüm festivali anlamından ve amacından uzaklaştırmaktadır. Bu nedenle, MUBI olarak seyircimizin bizden beklediği doğru duruşu sergilemek istiyor ve MUBI FEST İstanbul’un tamamını iptal etme kararı aldığımızı üzülerek bildiriyoruz.
