@windupkeys - because he saw his potential that he can kill off anyone, so he tries to get in to his good side before making the blow. Marcus pitied the starving people but he still has his mean demeanor because somehow he had inhabited the aristocrat's arrogance. His 'hmphs' you can hear.

Please don't mistake my analysis as me saying Marcus is a good person. I definitely don't think he is, I think he's complex and if I get the time I'll write a more detailed analysis of him. My post mostly was directed towards people drawing or writing him like a tsundere
