I would like to ask the festival’s president: after hosting a friend of Putin like Gergiev - who openly supports the war and is a self-declared Putinist - will Russia immediately stop bombing Ukraine? By the way, Canada, the UK, and France have imposed personal sanctions against Gergiev. I’ve also heard that Gergiev owns expensive real estate in Italy. Where does that money come from? Back in 2022, an investigation revealed that Gergiev - a trusted associate of Putin - was allegedly using a charitable foundation funded by state-owned companies as his personal wallet. Among the sponsors of the foundation were VTB, Russian Railways (RZhD), Sberbank, oligarch Alisher Usmanov, and the Moscow government, as well as other state organizations. Gergiev is not just a conductor and musician—he is a representative of Kremlin propaganda, part of a criminal regime. His participation in a European cultural event is tantamount to normalizing Russia’s war crimes.
