I would imagine they will lock the players out, it's been standard operating procedure for the league lately. Doesn't mean much until the next opening day rolls around. That is when there is the real potential for league revenue loss from missed games and also potential player salary loss.

@williamnyy23 @FoulTerritoryTV Lots to unpack here. We can agree that team spending hasn't kept up with league revenues. Regardless of how much the Yankees or Dodgers are spending compared to their revenue, those dollars still have to be allocated correctly.

It's not just about payroll in absolute terms. In terms of their net revenue, they aren't spending a ton. In fact, it actually close to league average (see here for the numbers going back 20 years: captainsblog.info/2024/05/04/his…). Also, for reasons explained in this thread, a team like the Yankees that is trying to sustain a brand by never rebuilding has to invest a more than typical because payroll is at least partially a lagging indicator (x.com/williamnyy23/s…). In summary, the Yankees aren't coming close to spending unlimited dollars on players. Rather, they have a very modest budget relative to their resources, and though that approach makes financial sense, it is prohibitive to accomplishments like winning 100 games, division titles, pennants, and championships.

@williamnyy23 @FoulTerritoryTV I mean since 2011 the Yankees have been top 3 in payroll every year except 1.... so they are obviously spending a ton. You can criticize how those dollars are being allocated but dude they are spending money. I will always be for teams spending unlimited dollars on players.

@FoulTerritoryTV @zbritton The goal of the Yankees owner should be for his team to win the World Series, not to create artificial cost constraints so teams can collectively be MORE profitable without improving the fan experience. I get that argument coming from the media or a fan, but not a former player.

Another business-savvy owner finding ways to generate revenue. Would think this will also increase fan traffic to games, concessions, etc. It’s all tied together, even if no one wants to say it out loud. Profits 📈

@JerryKline21054 Closer. Bautista had shoulder surgery, so he's out for a while. Hopefully Bautista returns and you can get him leverage and non leverage innings to get rolling. You build out the rest of pen anticipating Helsley is locking down the 9th.

Really really like this move. If he is close to 2022-2025 St. Louis version, this is a great deal for the O's.

@kylegrantham I hear you. Getting trade isn't always easy on guys. Sometimes they never settle in. NY is a tough place to get traded to for some. As long as there wasn't an injury, I'll bet on the track record. Guy is capable of being the best closer in the AL East.
