There are many concerns of what’s happening in the chart feeds from across the chain. In the memecoin arena in this low volume state, it’s even more amplified. Here’s a breakdown based on information available. Topic : There’s an understandable amount of on the XRPL memecoin scene that is a hot topic of conversation currently - MEV bots and arbitrage bots. People see live feed activity and think they are being sandwiched by mev bots on the charts as they make transactions. What is the actual reality? Breakdown : The reality on XRPL memecoins is that true "MEV sandwich bots" (as people know them from Ethereum or Solana) are extremely limited or effectively nonexistent due to the ledger's architecture, and what you're seeing on charts is overwhelmingly the result of arbitrage bots exploiting low-liquidity price impact. Here's the clear breakdown, based on XRPL's design, official docs, technical papers, and current community/XRPL memecoin discussions: Why traditional MEV/sandwich attacks don't work the same on XRPL - No miners or block builders : XRPL uses federated consensus (validators agree on ledgers every ~3-5 seconds). Theorises that there are no miners who can be bribed with gas fees to reorder transactions. No public mempool where bots can reliably see and insert txs like on ETH. - Pseudo-random deterministic ordering : Transactions in a ledger are shuffled via a canonical algorithm (based on ledger hash). This makes precise front-running/back-running (the core of a sandwich) very hard/impractical. Papers and XRPL docs explicitly highlight this as a major MEV defence. Result : Classic MEV bots (e.g., the Ethereum-style ones that bundle a buy-victim-sell in one block) can't reliably operate. XRPL has operated for 12+ years with native DEX/order books and (since 2024) native AMM with zero major MEV exploits reported at protocol level. What is actually happening (the arbitrage bot reality) In low-liquidity memecoin pools (typical on XRPL DEX/AMM + CLOB hybrid), this is what creates the "sandwich" look on charts : 1. You submit a market buy (especially with high slippage tolerance, common for memecoins). 2. Fast bots detect the incoming price impact (via network gossip or ledger state). They front-run with their own buy (pushing price up more) or immediately arbitrage/sell into your impact. 3. Price spikes on chart → your tx executes at worse effective price → bot dumps right after (or in the next ledger), reversing the move. 4. Result on chart/logs : Looks exactly like a sandwich, and you lose 5-15% instantly. Bots often hold 0 balance long-term (trustlines open just for farming). These are arbitrage bots, not MEV searchers. Examples: - Rapido (and similar) is repeatedly called out as a high-volume arbitrage bot farming memecoins. It (and others) account for massive % of DEX volume by correcting tiny inefficiencies across pairs, AMM vs CLOB, or even vs external markets. - They thrive because XRPL has near-zero fees + fast finality. Perfect for high-frequency arb. SpyDex.net has measures implemented within the platform speed of txn that counter these to a high degree. This is rampant in the early/small memecoin scene because liquidity is thin. A single decent-sized buy creates an immediate arb opportunity that bots pounce on. It's not malicious "targeting you" in the MEV sense — it's just bots doing what bots do in inefficient markets. Why the confusion is so hot right now : - Charts + tx explorers make it look identical to ETH/SOL sandwiches. - People new to XRPL assume it's the same MEV problem everywhere. - But technically and in practice : arbitrage/front-running via slippage exploitation >> true MEV. Conclusion : You're almost certainly being hit by arbitrage bots (Rapido et al.) farming low-liq memecoins, not classic MEV sandwich bots. The XRPL design actually protects against the worst of MEV — the real issue is thin liquidity + loose slippage settings in the memecoin meta. As volume grows and tools improve, this should ease, but for now: trade smarter (small orders, limits, check slippage) or accept the bot tax on microcaps. SpyDex is not alone in its fight against the bots, but we ARE countering them efficiently. Traders should also take proactive measures in evaluating slippage, liquidity and other factors before deciding to enter.
