President @barackobama’s summer reading list is here 📚 This year, President Obama is inviting all of you to come read these picks at the Obama Presidential Center, and we invited a few book lovers to share their first reactions. What are you reading first?

It’s that time of year again: here are some of the books I’ve enjoyed this summer. If you’ve read any good ones, let me know!

In June, when we debuted the first official portrait of President and Mrs. Obama at the Obama Presidential Center Museum, the world went wild for the story of how Michelle Obama had long hoped to collaborate with renowned artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby, and how deeply the experience moved Crosby. This is a behind-the-scenes look at how this landmark piece of art was created. Now, we hope you can come see the craft, care and collaboration for yourself in the Hope and Change Lobby at the Obama Presidential Center Museum. It’s a free space, and open to the public.

America is a constant work in progress. Every generation must take up the unfinished work of the last and carry it further—protecting what’s right, fixing what’s wrong, and making our union a little more perfect. 250 years later, that’s more important than ever.

I would read letters like Emily’s every night in the White House. They were powerful reminders of why the work we did mattered, and who we were fighting for. When folks visit the Obama Presidential Center, my hope is that they see their stories reflected in the exhibits, and leave inspired to change their own neighborhoods.

My sister Maya and I were profoundly shaped by the influence of our mom, Ann Dunham. Giving Maya a preview of the Obama Presidential Center, including a new sculpture by Maya Lin dedicated to our mom’s memory, was truly special.

Reconstruction was a pivotal and turbulent chapter in our nation’s history – and its consequences are still being felt today.
