The lessons learned in the classroom don’t stay there. Time management. Collaboration. Communication. Critical thinking. These aren’t just academic skills, they’re the foundation of success in athletics and in life beyond the field of play. When students grow in the classroom, they excel on the court, too. #EducationBasedAthletics #StudentLeadership #PlayPerformCompeteTogether

AHSAA Hall of Fame Spotlight presented by Drive Safe Alabama - Buckle up every trip, every seat! Hackleburg’s 2011 Tornado Damage Was True Test of John Hardin’s Leadership By BILL PLOTT, For the AHSAA MONTGOMERY – Hackleburg High School principal John Hardin established a reputation of being a strong, steady leader. The true test of his leadership came, however, following the devastating tornado that battered his school and town in April of 2011. His leadership as Hackleburg faced the challenge of rebuilding its school and town was just one of many reasons Hardin is being inducted into the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Hall of Fame. He is of 12 individuals in the Class of 2026 who will be enshrined at the Hall of Fame banquet on Monday, March 23, at 6 p.m., at the Montgomery Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center. “The true test of his leadership came in April 2011,” said Marion County Schools Superintendent Ann West. “The April 27 tornadoes that year destroyed both the elementary and high schools in Hackleburg. Mr. Hardin stepped up and provided great leadership during a very trying time. Not only had the schools been destroyed, but the entire town was also destroyed. For the next four years, they had school in modular units. It was a demanding and difficult situation that Mr. Hardin made the best of every day and did it with great attitude.” Hardin was born in Mississippi but grew up in Hackleburg where he graduated from Hackleburg High School in 1974. He earned his college degree at the University of Mississippi in 1978, and a master’s degree from the University of West Alabama. Hardin, a successful coach and teacher before becoming an administrator, began his teaching and coaching career at Amory (MS) Middle School in 1978, moving up to Amory High School in 1980. In 1984, he returned home to Hackleburg, accepting a position as assistant coach as his alma mater. He became head football coach in 1989, a position he held through the 2008 season. His record at Hackleburg was 118-98 with seven regional championships and 12 state playoff appearances. Three teams won 10 games including the 1996 squad which finished the regular season undefeated. Hardin had 10 All State players. One of them, Danny Gosa, was the Class 1A Player of the Year in 1995. He has also served as head softball coach and girls’ basketball coach at Hackleburg. His softball record was 246-119 with five Area championships, four Elite 8, and two Final Four appearances. Five teams won 20 or more games, and the 1994 team had a 30-10 record en route to the Final Four. As girls’ basketball coach, Hardin compiled a 236-106 career record. His teams won four Area titles and two Elite 8 and Final Four appearances. Seven teams won 20 or more games with the 1997 squad setting a school record with 28 wins. Six of his players were named to All State and All Tournament teams. Considered an outstanding leader in education and the community, Hardin served on the AHSAA District 7 board for 23 years. He was on the Central Board of Control for eight years serving a term as president. Additionally, his contributions to the AHSAA included service on the Finance Committee, Reclassification Committee, Long Range Planning Committee, and Hall of Fame Selection Committee. Superintendent West said, “Mr. Hardin is a very humble man. I worked with him in his roles as a teacher, coach, and principal. He did an outstanding job in all these roles. John Hardin is a leader, and he led his classroom, his players, and his school very effectively. “He coached young students to be the best athletes they could be and most importantly, he taught them how to be responsible and respectful. He wanted all of the students that he touched to grow up to be good people. Mr. Hardin was tireless in his efforts to make sure that he left a mark on young people as a teacher, a coach, and a principal.” His leadership skills were called by the school system and community many times. The most crucial time came following that 2011 weather disaster. Alabama State House Representative from Marion County Tracy Estes agrees. “Johnny was the perfect fit to serve at a Class 1A school where the entire community revolves around the local educational and athletic programs, and the head coaches and administrators are the ones around which activity encircles,” Estes said. “My friend excelled in this role. He was always personable, engaged, humble, but most of all caring. His daily interaction in our community will always leave a lasting memory in my mind.” Hardin received the AHSAA Making a Difference Award in 2019. He was elected to the Marion County Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and was named Hackleburg Alumnus of the Year in 2019.
