It’s time for our favourite day of the week again… it’s #ThrowbackFriday time! 😍 RIAT returned in 1999 in spectacular fashion, with the B-2A Spirit once again setting the show alight. One of the most poignant moments of the weekend was RIAT’s tribute to King Hussein of Jordan, one of the show’s most loyal supporters, who had passed away earlier that year. A unique flypast took place in his honour, featuring the Jordanian Royal Flight’s DH104 Dove escorted by four Extra EA300s of the Royal Jordanian Falcons, followed by a moving ‘missing man’ salute from four Jaguars of No. 6 Squadron. The static park was packed with rarities, including a first RIAT appearance from a Polish Navy M28 Bryza 1-R and French Air Force Mirage 2000D and 2000N, alongside impressive multiples such as seven Dutch F-16s, four Italian MB339s and three USAF C-141s. The Antonov An-124-100 also made history as RIAT’s largest-ever attendee. RIAT99 also introduced the NATO Pit Stop Challenge, where groundcrews raced against the clock to cross-service aircraft they had never worked on before - with the 48th Fighter Wing from RAF Lakenheath taking the win. The NATO 50th anniversary theme closed the flying display, showcasing decades of alliance airpower and marking a final British display appearance for the Starfighter and Crusader. It was an unforgettable show - but with major airfield works about to begin at Fairford, RIAT was suddenly left without a home. The show would go on… but where? ✈️

One million hours of the @eurofighter ✈️ The Eurofighter Typhoon has officially surpassed an incredible 1,000,000 flying hours, cementing its place as one of the world’s most capable and recognisable fast jets – and a long-standing favourite on the RIAT flightline. The Royal International Air Tattoo has been part of the Typhoon story from the very beginning, marking key milestones such as: ✈️1995 – the Typhoon’s first public flying display at RIAT ✈️2005 – Sqn Ldr Matthew Elliott debuts the @RAFTyphoonTeam ✈️2024 – the first public Typhoon display powered by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Over the past 30 years, RIAT has welcomed 160 Typhoons from across the world, each contributing to this remarkable million-hour legacy. And of course, no RIAT season would be complete without the unforgettable special schemes – turning heads in the air and stealing the spotlight on the ground in their striking, show-stopping liveries 🔥

From global airlift to the RIAT flightline 🌍✈️ The Boeing C-17A Globemaster III is the backbone of strategic airlift, built to deliver heavy cargo into short, narrow and even unpaved runways around the world. Operated by the 10th Transport Squadron of the Qatar Emiri Air Force, Qatar’s fleet of eight C-17s is based at Al Udeid and plays a vital role in international operations. At #RIAT25, one of these impressive aircraft took pride of place on static display in Qatar Airways markings – and even delivered its own cargo, transporting the AH-64E Apache that also appeared as part of Apache 50 🔥

Welcome back to #ThrowbackFriday! Join us as we take a trip down memory lane to explore the history of the Royal International Air Tattoo 🫶 RIAT97 stands out as one of the most powerful showcases of modern air power the event has ever delivered. As part of the United States Air Force’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the show featured an extraordinary lineup: no fewer than four B‑1Bs and two B‑52Hs graced the static and flying displays, setting the tone for an unforgettable year. Staying true to the ‘Theatre of the Air’ concept, the 1997 show opened with a two‑hour USAF tribute reflecting on the service’s origins and evolution. Highlights included an appearance by a B-2 Spirit, F‑117A Nighthawk and a poignant ‘missing man’ formation flown by a four‑ship of F‑15E Strike Eagles. The operational theme, Fighter 97, ensured the weekend was packed with fast‑jet energy. The RAF demonstrated its air defence capabilities with a dynamic set‑piece featuring Hawks from 100 Squadron, Tornado F3s from 111 Squadron and support from a Sentry AEW1. Adding to the international flavour, the flying programme welcomed several notable firsts: a MiG‑23ML from the Czech Air Force, a Mirage F1CE from the Spanish Air Force, and the debut of the Ukrainian Falcons, whose MiG‑29s brought a new aerobatic flair to British skies. RIAT98 marked another major milestone, celebrating the RAF’s 80th anniversary with a spectacular series of mixed flypasts, each grouped by era to showcase the Service’s evolution through the decades. The operational theme for the year, Skywatch, set the tone for a programme of outstanding flying displays. Making their flying display debut at RIAT were the Pennsylvania Air National Guard’s 193rd Special Operations Squadron, long-time supporters of the event since the early 1970s. Lockheed Martin also brought the then-latest variant of the Hercules, exhibiting the C-130J to demonstrate the future of this iconic transport aircraft. A British show debut was delivered by the Polish Air Force’s PZL-130TC Turbo Orlik display team, adding a splash of precision to the flying programme. On the ground, the undisputed star of the static park at RIAT98 was provided by the Ukrainian Air Force, with the Tu-22M3 ‘Backfire’ drawing crowds and attention throughout the show ✈️
