An interesting appointment for head of the NI Civil Service. Jayne Brady is an engineer by training, was a partner in a VC firm & may be unique among senior civil servants in listening her technology patents on her LinkedIn.

@JP_Biz Regardless of the Protocol surely the gentleman involved could set up a shelf subsidiary in Italy and import these European bees to Ireland with no issues?

There were 13,242 first COVID vaccine doses administered in NI yesterday (0.70% of the population), the second highest in a single day and the first day the weekly increase rate has topped 4% of the population. Scotland set a new daily record with 38,484; 0.71% of the population.

@JP_Biz Are we going to see border controls / posts on the island of Ireland to enforce this border then as the EU always insisted there would need to be?

@RaoulRuparel On 4/ is your point that a future UK govt could implement non regression bar in domestic legislation? If so is that not different from a legally binding international treaty? Surely it's unlikely a future UK government minded to implement such a bar would do so via treaty?

Ahead of a crucial week in Brexit talks, issue of level playing field (beyond state aid) has become a major obstacle to a deal. Especially around evolution/ratchet clauses. Both sides have got themselves into an ideological corner & are struggling to get out. Thread explaining 1/

@Rimbeux @MichaelAodhan Don't disagree that it's not historically been an issue, just that in my view the issues now, presenting an impasse to a deal, appear to primarily be state aid and fisheries (of all things). Good to chat with you!

@AKprofessional @MichaelAodhan This doesn’t tally with how NI became a WA core issue following lobbying from Ireland going back to 2015 that also took in US Congress. It’s not a proxy & if it is, then it’s about a show of unity. State Aid has become a thing under Johnson, as it’s a Cummings hobby horse

The. Bill. Does. Nothing. About GB-NI! That's a complete fallacy. It's about NI-GB and State Aid!

@Rimbeux @MichaelAodhan Use of that threat as part justification for the UKIM (which also addresses the potential for a repurposive EU interpretation of state aid law to preclude GB companies with NI operations benefiting from state aid) would seem to tell me that much.

@AKprofessional @MichaelAodhan Johnson comes at this from a pov that divergence is the whole point of Brexit, so there’s no point in it all unless UK has total freedom to go whatever direction. NI is clearly a barrier to that & also most important issue. Think it’s more the crux than a negotiation tool
