Architect Robert Adam was born on 24 July 1728. Adam’s famous designs included Culzean Castle, Edinburgh’s Charlotte Square… and our own General Register House, home of Scotland’s national archives.

Birth entry of mystery author and playwright Elizabeth MacKintosh in Inverness, 25 July 1896. MacKintosh is maybe best known now for her 1951 novel A Daughter of Time, written under her pen name “Josephine Tey”, about an investigation into the deaths of the Princes in the Tower.

The floral clock in front of #Inverness Castle, July 1990. It was part of the town's displays for the "Beautiful Scotland in Bloom" competition. The clock was 4.5 metres in diameter with the mechanism buried beneath. It was surrounded by three heraldic symbols depicting the coats of arms of Inverness's twin towns - Augsburg, La Baule, and St.Valéry-en-Caux. @InvernessCastle [source: Highland Council]

Marriage contract of Margaret of Scotland and King Erik II of Norway, 25 July 1281. Like many agreements of the era, the text was inscribed twice and the parchment was cut in half in a zigzag pattern, with both parties retaining half. Matching halves would prove a true copy.

The Ramanauskas family in the 1911 Census, living at New Monkland. Five year old Jonas grew up to become a prolific career criminal known as “Gentle Johnny”. He was drafted into the army and then the commandos during World War II for his safe-cracking skills.

A gathering of Clan Grant at Castle Grant on this day in 1912 to welcome James Ogilvie-Grant, the 30th Chief and 11th Earl of Seafield, to #Strathspey (he had been born and brought up in New Zealand). A former German "Jäger-class" torpedo recovery vessel on the shore at Loch anan Uamh in July 1994. Around 150 were built and a few were taken over by the Royal Navy at the end of #WWII. This one ran aground here and an attempt was made at restoring her but was never completed [source: Highland Council]
