The UK has never before seen an exhibition of the legendary Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, and now more than 400 objects are going on view at the V&A, including 100 ensembles and 50 artworks, along with accessories, jewelry, paintings, photographs, furniture, perfumes, and items from the archive. “Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art” encompasses looks from the house spanning from her first designs, from the 1920s, to the present day, under creative director Daniel Roseberry. A 15th-century altarpiece by Giovanni Bellini in Venice’s vaunted Gallerie dell’Accademia will be restored behind glass—giving viewers a chance to peer in and follow the process—over a two-year period estimated to cost $580,000. The French government has stepped in to stop the sale of a newly identified drawing by Hans Baldung, throwing a last-minute wrench into what was shaping up to be a major Old Master auction in Paris. The small portrait, dated to 1517 and attributed to the German Renaissance artist, was slated to hit the block at French auction house Beaussant Lefèvre, carrying an estimate of $1.74 million to $3.5 million. Two days before the auction, France’s culture ministry declared it a national treasure, triggering a 30-month export ban and effectively pulling it off the market. Archeologists working near Luxor have uncovered 22 painted wooden coffins containing mummies, according to the Daily News Egypt, which reported the news in February. The well-preserved sarcophagi date to Egypt’s Third Intermediate Period (1077–664 BCE). The archeological mission, which was affiliated with the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the Zahi Hawass Foundation for Heritage and Antiquities, also found a group of eight papyrus scrolls, some with their seals intact, in a pottery jar. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York announced Thursday that it had acquired a recently rediscovered Renaissance painting of significant art historical importance, "Madonna and Child with Saint John the Evangelist" (1512/1513) by 16th-century painter Rosso Fiorentino. The painting’s attribution had previously been questioned, with some scholars assigning it to Rosso and others to a contemporary; it had also been dated to 1520 and titled Madonna and Child.
