Her 27-year career on the State Bar of Georgia was defined by extraordinary service, earning her some of the state’s most prestigious legal and community awards. Her landmark Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 victories opened doors for countless minorities at institutions like Georgia Power and MARTA—leaving a legacy that continues to inspire.

Atlanta City Council celebrates Atlanta women making history! Olivia Parks Woods broke barriers as the first African American woman to serve as the City of Atlanta Municipal Clerk, bringing our record‑keeping and legislative processes into the modern era. She also made history statewide as the first African American in Georgia to serve on the International Institute of Municipal Clerks Board of Directors and as President of the Georgia Municipal Clerks/Finance Officers Association. Her leadership didn’t stop at City Hall. Even in retirement, Woods continued to serve her community through roles on the Atlanta Planning Advisory Board and the Atlanta Commission on Women. Her impact earned her major honors, including the Arthur Beavers NPU Leadership Award, the IIMC Distinguished Service Award, and the Mayor’s Distinguished Service Award. A true trailblazer whose legacy continues to inspire!

The Atlanta City Council recognizes and celebrates Atlanta Women Making History. Panke Bradley Miller became the first woman to serve on the Atlanta Board of Aldermen (now, the Atlanta City Council) from 1972-1979. As the Post 15 At Large representative, she championed efforts that protected neighborhoods and reshaped the city’s growth. She led the fight to stop the Stone Mountain Toll Road and I 485. Miller’s legacy as an elected official was recognized through a proclamation presented by the Atlanta City Council in 2023, and she continues to advocate for a stronger, more connected, and more inclusive Atlanta.
