On the concourse level of Mount Pleasant Station, crews have begun installing steel studs in the public areas of the station. Tiles will later be installed over these studs to form a wall.

Setting a new benchmark for sustainable tunnelling in Sydney ACCIONA has achieved the highest Design score ever awarded under Australia’s Infrastructure Sustainability rating program for the NSW Government’s Western Harbour Tunnel (WHT) project. Scoring 101.1 out of 110, the WHT project earned an IS v1.2 Design Rating of Leading. This reflects our team’s dedication to embedding sustainability throughout every stage of planning and design. The 6.5-kilometre WHT tunnel is Sydney’s first new road crossing of the harbour in over 30 years. We are delivering stage 2, which includes excavating 4.8 kilometres of traffic tunnels from Birchgrove to Cammeray, including beneath Sydney Harbour, and completing the tunnel fit out. Our design approach reduced potable water use by 42 per cent, saving approximately 2,560 megalitres over the project’s design life. Early collaboration with design partners led to a 35 per cent reduction in life cycle material impacts, driving significant carbon savings. The project delivers benefits beyond infrastructure. Berrys Bay is being revitalised into accessible public parkland, supported by marine research for ecosystem restoration; while employment pathways for women have been created through partnerships with Corrective Services NSW. As well, cultural narratives by Aboriginal artists Dennis Golding, Taleena Simon and local Elders are embedded in the Passing Knowledge artworks, honouring Cammeraygal and Wangal Country. Achieving this outstanding IS design rating sets a new benchmark for sustainable infrastructure in Australia. Leading Sustainable Construction in Auckland ACCIONA, as part of the Eastern Busway Alliance in Auckland, is delivering innovative solutions that benefit both people and the environment. Our team, working alongside Auckland Transport, Fletcher Construction, AECOM, and Jacobs, has implemented practical measures to reduce waste and protect local ecosystems. These efforts demonstrate how small, thoughtful choices can create lasting positive impacts. Four sections of Porous Lane, a flexible rubber footpath made from up to 60% locally sourced recycled tyres, have been installed. This innovation safeguards established magnolia trees by adapting to root movement, reducing maintenance needs, and providing safer, smoother paths for the community. Reusing half a tonne of tyres diverts waste from landfill and highlights how smart materials help urban spaces and nature thrive together. Our team also collected hundreds of illegally dumped tyres, ensuring they were responsibly recycled and repurposed. Choosing to repurpose surplus basalt on site as riprap reduced truck movements, cutting congestion, noise, and vibration. Moving Mega-Machines for Sydney’s Western Harbour Tunnel! We’ve successfully managed the complex transport of the BIGGEST parts for the LARGEST tunnel boring machines (TBMs) in the Southern Hemisphere on the NSW Government’s Western Harbour Tunnel project. Transporting 162 heavy TBM parts, the heaviest part weighing 324 tonnes, required careful planning and night-time road closures. Our team worked closely with traffic controllers and the NSW Police Force to ensure safe and efficient movement from Glebe Island to the City West Link portals. This logistical achievement enables the reassembly of these 120-metre machines in launch chambers deep under Birchgrove. Brisbane Metro milestone achieved with record sustainability outcome Brisbane Metro has delivered high-capacity, high-frequency turn-up-and-go services while setting a new sustainability benchmark for transport projects in Queensland. Through the ACCIONA and Arup Brisbane Move partnership, the Brisbane City Council project achieved an Infrastructure Sustainability Council As-Built v1.2 rating of Leading with a score of 89.02, the highest recorded in the state. This result reflects early design decisions and construction efficiencies that reduced whole of life carbon emissions by almost 60 per cent compared with the original concept design. The works reshaped more than 2.5 kilometres of Brisbane’s inner city and included a new tunnel beneath Adelaide Street, upgrades to major stations at King George Square, UQ Lakes, Buranda and the Cultural Centre, strengthening of Victoria Bridge, new sewer infrastructure and significant public space improvements across South Brisbane and the CBD. Lower emissions were embedded from the outset through practical choices such as using renewable energy during tunnelling, opting for more sustainable vehicles on site, reducing cement content in concrete and reusing materials wherever possible. Together, these measures avoided close to 43,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, while almost all uncontaminated spoil and the majority of construction waste were recovered and reused. Beyond environmental outcomes, the Brisbane Metro project delivered lasting community benefits through local jobs, training programs, apprenticeships and strong Indigenous participation. Cultural heritage uncovered during excavation was preserved and incorporated into the city’s public realm, alongside commissioned artwork and cultural ceremonies that reflect Brisbane’s history and identity. In the tunnel near Mount Pleasant Station, crews have installed the Linear Induction Motor (LIM) rail and the power rail. While the power rail supplies energy to the SkyTrain, the LIM rail is what drives the SkyTrain forward, using electromagnetic energy to accelerate or brake.
