I was reminded of a valuable life lesson during our Member-Guest last weekend
“One of the hardest skills is getting the goalposts to stop moving… but it’s so important”
Our one goal going into the weekend was to have as much fun as possible. Goal number two was to make the shootout, or the “finals” you could say
We had an incredibly fun couple of days, and the cherry on top was making it in
We set our goal and hit it!
But then came the first shootout hole, and we squeaked by.. onto hole 2
We had made it further than we thought we would, but then reality kicked in that we could go even further
And the goalposts moved. We were in the drivers seat on hole 2 and I hit a shot that I haven’t hit in many many many rounds that eliminated us, and I was gutted
As I sulked for 10 minutes in disbelief of that, I thought about how this was no different than anything else in life
We’re constantly moving the goalposts - and it can lead to a very unhappy life
I told myself after those 10 minutes, just be happy for having an absolute blast, and accomplishing what we set out to do, and move on
I help people everyday create financial goals and work to achieve them, and when it comes to money, it is so easy to move the goalposts
But doing so will create a unfulfilled life of a constant chase to the next thing, trust me on that
It’s great to set new goals and constant be in pursuit of new heights, but you also have to be mindful along the way to stop and be content/happy for all you have achieved and where you are
