🌿 Meet Desplatsia subericarpa (Elephant Fruit)! This native forest tree not only supports biodiversity but also serves as a natural support for Uziza—Piper guineense—a nutritious and aromatic vegetable growing in the #IITAForestCenter Ethnobotanic Nursery. #nativetrees #bios🌱

Maize remains one of the most important crops across Africa, cultivated on more than 40 million hectares of farmland. Nigeria is currently the continent’s leading producer, generating about 16.5 million metric tons, followed closely by South Africa with approximately 15.8 million metric tons.  For over 300 million people, it is not just a crop,it is the primary staple that supports daily nutrition, livelihoods, and food security across the region.  Beyond its role on the dinner table, maize is remarkably versatile. Every part of the crop has value, serving both food and non-food purposes. From human consumption and livestock feed to industrial uses, maize continues to play a vital role in strengthening food systems and supporting rural economies.  As demand grows, sustainable maize production and innovation in seed systems, climate-smart practices, and value addition will be critical to ensuring that this essential crop continues to nourish communities and drive agricultural transformation across Africa.  #WithScienceWeCan #IITAResearch #FoodSecurity #IITAMandateCrops

Women have only 64% of the legal rights men have globally. At this pace, equality could take 286 years. That’s not a timeline. It’s a wake-up call. This #IWD2026, we demand: Rights. Justice. Action. #ForAllWomenAndGirls #GenderinAg #WithScienceWeCan #IYWF2026
