🚀 December spotlight: EU AI uptake data, policy evolution & transparency standards 🔹 AI adoption continues to grow across EU businesses New Eurostat data shows that 20 % of EU enterprises with 10+ employees now use AI technologies in their operations, up from 13.5 % in 2024 — a sign that AI adoption is accelerating across sectors and countries. 📘 New CAIRNE Report | What the “CERN Model” Really Means For nearly ten years, thousands of AI scientists and technologists across Europe have called for a CERN for AI, a research centre for AI in Europe based on the “CERN Model” for Big Science. The “CERN Model” refers to the principles and key features of CERN’s operations, governance, finance, legal framework, and more. They are the reasons CERN became the world’s most successful collaborative scientific venture. Applying the CERN Model to AI would be the most effective way to boost European capabilities in AI. The call for a CERN for AI has gained considerable traction over the last two years.  Earlier this year, when Ursula von der Leyen presented the Commission’s plans for Europe’s "AI Gigafactories", she referred to them as “akin to a CERN for AI”, in reference to the nuclear research centre in Geneva. Recently, the Commission also announced that its new RAISE programme ("Resource for AI Science in Europe") is based on the concept of a “CERN for AI.” It is time to remind ourselves – and the European Commission – what "CERN for AI" really means. CAIRNE's new report describes the CERN model through its ten key attributes. 🌦️ AI meets weather forecasting, and the CAIRNE Research Network is part of the journey The AI Weather Quest, organised by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - @ECMWF and endorsed by the World Meteorological Organization @WMO , brings together the global AI and meteorology communities to tackle one of the hardest challenges in prediction science: forecasting 3 to 4 weeks ahead. By applying cutting-edge machine learning, participants are helping to push the boundaries of sub-seasonal weather forecasting. 🗯️ Mental Well-being in AI Research — Thank You for Joining Us at ESSAI 2025 At this year’s European Summer School on Artificial Intelligence (#ESSAI) organised by the European Association for Artificial Intelligence @EurAI_ECCAI, the CAIRNE Rising Researcher Network hosted the third edition of our Workshop on Mental Well-being in AI Research. Through open lunchtime discussions and a well-attended panel session, we explored the often-overlooked emotional challenges of academic life—from dealing with rejections and deadline pressure to fostering healthier, more supportive research environments. Around 80 participants—nearly half of ESSAI attendees—joined us for the panel, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Our heartfelt thanks to all who participated, especially the members of the Rising Researcher Network, and to our dedicated organisers Marie Anastacio and Mohamed Behery.
