Today, we honor more than one moment — we honor a legacy. 🧠✨ On National Doctors’ Day, at the close of Women’s History Month, and during Match season, we are reminded that excellence is built across generations. Featuring our Women’s History Month spotlight, Dr. Holly Gilmer, whose journey in neurosurgery was shaped by mentorship from trailblazer Dr. Alexis Cladey — the first Black woman neurosurgeon. This is what representation looks like. This is what mentorship makes possible. This is what legacy feels like. As the next generation prepares to step into this field, we celebrate those who paved the way — and those continuing to carry it forward. 🖤 #NationalDoctorsDay #WomensHistoryMonth #Match2026 #ASBNOrg #Neurosurgery

For many physicians, the path to medicine begins with a personal story — a moment that inspires a lifelong commitment to patient care. For Dr. Olabisi Sanusi, MD, that moment came after losing her grandmother to cancer, a loss that shaped her decision to pursue a career in medicine and dedicate her work to caring for patients facing complex neurological diseases. Dr. Sanusi specializes in skull base pathologies and brain tumors and completed advanced fellowship training in skull base surgery at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Her research focuses on improving clinical outcomes for patients with complex brain conditions. She currently serves as a Board Member At-Large for the American Society of Black Neurosurgeons (ASBN), helping guide initiatives that strengthen leadership, collaboration, and professional visibility within the neurosurgical community. This Women's History Month, ASBN celebrates leaders like Dr. Sanusi who embody our mission as The Home of Black Neurosurgical Excellence. For every Black woman who has ever wondered if she belongs in neurosurgery — this is what it looks like when you do. Dr. Odette Harris, MD, MPH, Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford School of Medicine and Director of the Stanford Brain Injury Program, is a global leader in traumatic brain injury care, research, and rehabilitation. With more than 25 years of distinguished service, her work continues to advance both the science of neurotrauma and the pursuit of health equity in neurosurgical care. Her impact is both clinical and cultural. As the Paralyzed Veterans of America Endowed Professor of Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, she made history as the first African American woman in neurosurgery and the first woman at Stanford to receive this honor — a testament to her excellence, leadership, and enduring influence. Her extraordinary contributions have earned national recognition, including the establishment of the Odette Harris Lectureship by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons — an honor reserved for leaders whose work has transformed the field. Because when one Black woman rises in spaces like this, she doesn’t just take a seat at the table — she expands it. At the American Society of Black Neurosurgeons, we proudly celebrate trailblazers like Dr. Harris who embody our mission as The Home of Black Neurosurgical Excellence — advancing leadership, research, and equitable neurosurgical care worldwide. #WomensHistoryMonth #WHM #ASBNOrg #Neurosurgery #ASBNConnects #BlackWomenInMedicine #BlackExcellence

This Women’s History Month, we honor Dr. Johnson-Nowlin, MD — a Black woman, founder, and force in pediatric neurosurgery. 🧠✨ As the founder of the Brain and Spine Institute for Children (B.A.S.I.C.), she has built more than a practice — she has created a space where innovation, compassion, and continuity of care come together for children and families across Central Florida. As one of the few Black women leading and owning an independent pediatric neurosurgical practice, her work is both groundbreaking and deeply personal — expanding access, representation, and excellence in care. Above all, she considers her most cherished accomplishments to be her husband and children. She is not just advancing the field — she is redefining it.
