Let it be known across Malawi that the lives of older persons matter, and any attack on them is an attack on the fabric of our society. We must respond with urgency, justice, and compassion.

This was not just a murder. It was an attack on the dignity, safety, and sanctity of older persons in Malawi. We cannot allow this to go unanswered. It is our hope that the Malawi Police Service will expedite investigations and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

I am deeply saddened and outraged by the brutal killing of Gogo Ruth Lauzhi, 85, from Bazhu Village, Nsanje — just days after Malawi marked #WEAAD2025. This horrific act is a painful contradiction to everything we stand for.

Yesterday, Malawi commemorated World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) 2025 in Lilongwe. Graced by Hon. Jean Sendeza, the event called for urgent action to protect older persons from abuse and uphold their dignity. Let’s #SpotTheRedFlags and #StopElderAbuse. #DignityForAllAges
