No Portuguese King has worn a crown since 1640. Why? Because the Blessed Virgin Mary is the official Queen of the Kingdom. If you look at paintings of Portuguese monarchs after 1640, the crown is always resting on a table next to them. King Dom João IV survived the Restoration War and gained independence from Spain. In gratitude, he took his royal crown off his head and placed it at the feet of a statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. He declared Mary the true Queen of Portugal. For nearly 300 years after that, earthly kings refused to wear it. They understood that all political authority is temporary, borrowed, and ultimately subordinate to Heaven.
