Companies spent early 2026 in "tokenmaxxing" mode, pushing employees to burn as many AI tokens as possible as proof of AI adoption. That's the same instinct that drove companies to chase vanity metrics in every past tech cycle: - lines of code, - social media followers, - app downloads. The difference this time is the vanity metric came with a real invoice attached, since AI usage scales directly with cost. For the rest of 2026, expect "valuemaxxing," measuring outcomes instead of usage, to become the standard enterprise AI conversation.
