Growing Sweet Potatoes in Containers: Big Harvests in Small Spaces You don’t need a large garden to grow your own food. The image above shows a simple yet powerful idea: growing sweet potatoes in containers. With just a bucket or a grow bag, you can produce an impressive harvest right on a patio, balcony, or small backyard. Why Grow Sweet Potatoes in Containers? Sweet potatoes are one of the easiest and most rewarding crops to grow in confined spaces. Their vines grow vigorously above ground, while underground they form nutritious, delicious tubers. Benefits of container growing: Perfect for small spaces Easy to control soil quality Better drainage than ground soil Fewer pests and diseases Choosing the Right Container The key to success is giving the roots enough space to expand. Best options: 5–10 gallon buckets Fabric grow bags (like the black one in the image) Large pots with drainage holes Deeper containers allow for larger and more plentiful sweet potatoes. Soil Matters More Than You Think Sweet potatoes thrive in loose, well-draining soil. Heavy or compacted soil will limit growth. Ideal soil mix: Compost (for nutrients) Coconut coir or peat moss (for moisture retention) Perlite or sand (for drainage) The goal is soft, airy soil that allows tubers to expand easily. Planting and Growing Sweet potatoes are grown from “slips” (young shoots), not seeds. Steps: Plant slips about 10–15 cm deep Space them evenly in the container Water thoroughly after planting As the plant grows, vines will spread and leaves will become dense and vibrant, just like in the image. Watering and Care Sweet potatoes like consistent moisture but not soggy conditions. Water regularly, especially in hot weather Ensure proper drainage to avoid rot Add mulch to retain moisture Harvesting: The Reward After about 90–120 days, your sweet potatoes are ready to harvest. Gently empty the container or dig carefully to reveal the tubers—just like the handful shown in the image. There’s something incredibly satisfying about pulling fresh, homegrown food straight from the soil. Final Thoughts Growing sweet potatoes in containers proves that you don’t need a farm to be productive. With a little planning and care, even a small space can yield a meaningful harvest.

A worm tower is a perforated tube buried upright in the centre of a raised bed. Kitchen scraps go in at the top, worms process them underground, and the resulting worm castings disperse directly into the surrounding soil through the holes. No turning, no bulky compost bin, no odour. A single tube feeds roots across roughly 1.5 metres in every direction. Two towers are sufficient for a standard 3-metre allotment bed. 🪱 Build in ten minutes: — A 30 cm diameter PVC or drainage pipe, 50 cm long — Drill 8–10 mm holes across the lower two-thirds of the tube, approximately every 5 cm — Sink the tube into the centre of the bed, leaving 10 cm above soil level — Add a handful of mature compost and a few garden worms to get things started — Cover the opening with an inverted terracotta pot 🌿 Each week, add vegetable peelings, crushed eggshells, coffee grounds, or fruit scraps. Worms enter through the holes, process the material, and continuously enrich the surrounding soil.

Two-Row (Paired Row) Planting of Maize Two-row planting is a method where maize is planted in pairs of rows that are close together, and then a larger space is left before the next pair of rows. Distance between the two rows in a pair:45 cm Distance between pairs: 90 cm Distance between plants in a row: 25cm ADVANTAGES 1. Better Use of Land The arrangement allows more plants per area while still giving enough space for growth 2. Easier Farm Operations The wide space between pairs allows: -easy weeding -fertilizer application -spraying -intercropping 3. Higher Yield Potential Because plants receive: -better sunlight -better air circulation -less competition for nutrients 4. Good for Intercropping Farmers can plant crops like: -beans -groundnuts -soybeans in the wide spaces between the paired rows. 4. Simple Example of Population With correct spacing, you can have about 44,000-53,000 maize plants per hectare, which is ideal for good yield

Maize farming is the pillar of food security. Success requires selecting right seeds, rigorous weeding, and balanced fertilization. Critical moisture during silking and vigilant pest control are key to high yields and quality grain.

LAYER'S FEEDS? Find a formulation guide based on expert recommendations: 1. Starter Feed (0-8 weeks) - Maize: 50 kg - Soya Meal: 17.5 kg - Fish Meal: 12 kg - Maize Bran: 10 kg - Sunflower Cake: 4.5 kg - Limestone: 4 kg - Bone Meal: 1.5 kg - Salt: 300 grams - Premix: 200 grams - Toxin Binder: 100 grams This feed provides the necessary high protein (18-20%) for the rapid growth and development of the chicks. 2. Grower Feed (9-20 weeks) - Maize: 60 kg - Soya Meal: 14 kg - Fish Meal: 10 kg - Maize Bran: 7 kg - Sunflower Cake: 5 kg - Limestone: 2.5 kg - Bone Meal: 1.2 kg - Salt: 200 grams - Premix: 100 grams - Toxin Binder: 50 grams This formulation lowers the protein content to around 16-18%, which is ideal for the continued growth and preparation of the birds for laying. 3. Layer Feed (20+ weeks) - Maize: 55 kg - Soya Meal: 13 kg - Fish Meal: 8 kg - Maize Bran: 12 kg - Sunflower Cake: 6 kg - Limestone: 5 kg - Bone Meal: 2 kg - Salt: 300 grams - Premix: 150 grams - Toxin Binder: 100 grams This feed supports egg production with around 16% protein and the necessary calcium for strong eggshells.
