Today, Governor Jim Guy Tucker passed away in the comfort of his Little Rock home, surrounded by his family & the caring medical professionals that kept him comfortable in his final hours. We are mourning his loss, and we are sending our love and prayers to his wife Betty, their children, and the many friends and family members who mourn him today. No matter the circumstances, Governor Tucker never stopped serving our state and our country. After graduating from Harvard, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Though health problems plagued him throughout his life, he never stopped doing jobs that were both exhausting and vital for our country and state. He documented the brave Arkansans at war in Vietnam as a Civilian War Correspondent, shaping Americans’ understanding of the conflict. As a legislator, Tucker boldly reformed our juvenile justice system, creating rehabilitation focused programs and separate facilities for minors. As our Attorney General, he stood up for families & improved conditions in Arkansas prisons. In Congress, he secured critical funding to protect the beauty of our Arkansas wetlands and to develop our rural communities. As Governor, he gave much-deserved raises to teachers and managed one of the most pivotal periods of economic growth in our state’s history.    Jim Guy Tucker met the moment for Arkansas, time and time again. As our nation inaugurated President Bill Clinton, Jim Guy Tucker was ready on day one to lead Arkansas into a new era of prosperity. And later in his life, at 78 years old, he was walking a mile in downtown Little Rock with Dr. Chris Jones, encouraging Arkansans to choose a Governor who would listen & learn from them, rather than talk down to them. Jim Guy Tucker was one-of-a-kind. His bravery and persistence, coupled with his goofy smile and subtle sense of humor, will be so missed by Arkansas Democrats. Governor Tucker never stopped working for a better Arkansas, and his tireless example will continue to inspire us to move forward and keep going in pursuit of a brighter future for the state we love so dearly.
