Sometimes, as I have recently, I find myself going down the rabbit-hole of near death experiences. It strikes me every time just how thin the veil between living and dying is, and how though we perceive the departed as being in some distant far-off land, they are in reality naught but seconds away from us at any given moment. Or rather, we are seconds away from them. With the unwavering belief in my mind that there is a something after death, it almost excites me, the thought of the other side being so very close. One can get into the mind of a religious fanatic for a moment who holds no fear for the not-so-final departure at all. Meditations on your mortality are important, I think. In the past I've compared the 'cattle die, kinsmen die' to the Buddhist five remembrances, a positive reading of these verses alongside a longer meditation on them can be very insightful. Obviously, you should be careful. Don't get too excited for death, don't get nihilistic, and consider that in NDE's, people might often report the most wonderful of experiences -- only still to be driven by desire to return back to 'life'.
