Today marks the fourth observance of the #InternationalDayofZeroWaste with the theme "Food Waste". Azerbaijan joined the UNGA high-level event to stress the urgent need to tackle food waste, an issue with major implications for climate, ecosystems, and food security. Building on #COP29, the initiatives to reduce methane from organic waste and promote resilient, circular food systems were highlighted. In line with 🇹🇷 Türkiye’s leadership on the #ZeroWaste agenda, set to be one of the priorities of its #COP31 Presidency, we look forward to strengthening cooperation, including at #WUF13 in Baku, at the intersection of cities, climate, and sustainability.

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the UN was delighted to host a diplomatic briefing for a group of brilliant students from California State University, who are representing Azerbaijan at the annual New York National Model United Nations Conference (NMUN), the world’s oldest and largest intercollegiate Model UN conference. We are grateful to students for their stellar research and preparation and are proud of the way they are representing Azerbaijan.

At today’s UN briefing on #COP31, organized by Türkiye, Azerbaijan reaffirmed its strong support for Türkiye and Australia in delivering an effective and action-oriented COP process, underscoring the importance of translating the progress achieved in Baku and Belém into tangible outcomes in Antalya. Building on #COP29 outcomes, the importance of the Troika approach and continued close cooperation with the COP30 and COP31 Presidencies was highlighted to sustain high-level engagement throughout the year. It was emphasized that the key events in Azerbaijan, including the Shamakhi Climate Retreat, Climate Week 2026 and #WUF13, will help strengthen the urban–climate nexus, enhance coordination, and connect negotiations with implementation realities in the lead-up to COP31.

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, with the support of the International Organization for Migration Office to the United Nations, organized a virtual meeting of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (#GCM) Champion Countries ahead of the 2nd International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), which will be held in May 2026 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Mr. Ulvi Aliyev, Head of the International Cooperation Department of the State Migration Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan, delivered opening remarks on behalf of Azerbaijan's Co-chairmanship of the GCM Champions Initiative for 2026, emphasizing the IMRF as a key venue to highlight achievements and challenges for global migration governance and the Progress Declaration to be adopted, as an opportunity to identify partnerships. During the virtual meeting, Mr. Jonathan Prentice, Head of the United Nations Network on Migration Secretariat, stressed the importance of international cooperation to address the evolving challenges in migration issues. The meeting followed by an exchange of views among the GCM Champions on the upcoming 2nd IMRF and the Progress Declaration to be adopted as it's outcome.

On 23 March 2026, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, in partnership with the Social and Psychological Rehabilitation Centre of the Youth – “Dirchelish” (Revival), inaugurated an exhibition of young Azerbaijani artists “Art for Cultural Diplomacy, Azerbaijan – Where the East and the West meet” at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The event was held on the occasion of the International Day of Novruz established by General Assembly resolution 64/253 of 23 February 2010. Welcoming diplomats, UN officials and guests attending the exhibition, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the UN, Ambassador Tofig F. Musayev @TofigMusayev, emphasized the importance of Novruz as a celebration deeply rooted in the values of peace, mutual understanding, and cultural diversity, and serving as a powerful reminder of the role of culture in fostering unity and dialogue among peoples. Certificates were presented to young artists whose paintings were displayed at the exhibition. The candidate of Azerbaijan to the Committee on the Rights of the Child, Mr. Farid Adilov @FaridAdilov, also participated in the opening ceremony of the exhibition and presented his vision on the future work of the Committee. Amb. Tofig F. Musayev, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, hosted Ms. Ugochi Daniels, Deputy Director General for Operations of the International Organisation for Migration. Productive discussions were held on the upcoming 2nd International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), to be held this May at United Nations Headquarters and Azerbaijan’s co-chairmanship in the Global Compact for Safe, Regular and Orderly Migration Champion Countries Initiative for 2026. Azerbaijan’s national measures and preparatory works in relation to migration issues and the 2nd IMRF were presented.

At the informal consultations on the Progress Declaration of the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), delivering a statement on behalf of the 41 Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (#GCM) Champion Countries Initiative as its co-chair for 2026, #Azerbaijan noted that the zero draft provides an important basis for the start of deliberations. It was informed that the #GCM Champion Countries remain committed to working constructively with all delegations to achieve a balanced and action‑oriented Progress Declaration - one that delivers a meaningful outcome for this second IMRF and strengthens efforts to reduce vulnerabilities and make migration safer, more orderly, and more regular for all.

At the commemorative meeting of the General Assembly to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, #Azerbaijan informed of its consistent efforts to foster understanding and build bridges among different cultures. It was mentioned, in this regard, that the 7th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue will be held this autumn in Baku. At the same time, attention was drawn to combatting racial prejudices motivated by ideologies of racial superiority that continue to pose a serious threat to human lives and have the potential to hinder reconciliation efforts in post-conflict settings.

At the High-level event to commemorate the World Water Day, held in the UN Headquarters in New York, Azerbaijan highlighted the urgency of achieving SDG 6, emphasized the Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action, launched under its COP29 Presidency, and outlined national efforts to enhance water security, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable water management.

Two high-level events were held on 16 March at United Nations Headquarters in New York to mark the International Day to Combat Islamophobia established by General Assembly resolution 76/254 of 15 March 2022. During deliberations, #Azerbaijan empahasized that the alarming rise of Islamophobia, including in digital spaces and through the media, require the international community’s commitment to promote social cohesion and protect religious freedom. It was further stressed that Azerbaijan had also suffered from Islamophobia. The monuments associated with the Islamic faith were subjected to deliberate vandalism, desecration and destruction in its formerly occupied territories and beyond the country’s borders. The participants were informed that Azerbaijan will host the next international conference on addressing Islamophobia later this year in Baku.

On the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, we reaffirm our firm commitment to respect, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence among cultures and religions. Islamophobia, discrimination, and hatred against individuals because of their faith undermine the very principles of human dignity, equality, and mutual understanding. Such prejudice has no place in our societies. Islam is rooted in values of peace, compassion, justice, and solidarity. Misrepresenting or stigmatizing Islam is unacceptable. Combating intolerance in all its forms remains essential to building inclusive, peaceful, and resilient societies.

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the UN and the State Committee on the Family, Women and Children Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with the support of the Secretariat of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), organized a high-level side event on the margins of the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women on “Women’s Empowerment across CICA countries”. Ms. Bahar Muradova, Chairperson of the State Committee on the Family, Women and Children Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, as a panelist, outlined the national measures taken to advance women’s rights and highlighted the importance of cooperation in the CICA region to achieve better results in women’s empowerment. Ms. Zhang Ling, CICA Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Çiğdem Erdoğan, Member of the Grand National Assembly of the Republic of Türkiye, Amb. Aida Kasymalieva, Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the United Nations, and Ms. Paivi Kannisto, Chief of Peace and Security Unit of the UN Women, participated as panelists and stressed the need to enhance national and international efforts for women’s empowerment by drawing attention to specific measures. The event was moderated by Ms. Nahida Baghirova, Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the UN. Engaging discussions were held after the panel session with the participation of different stakeholders. The event brought together representatives from Member States, international organizations, academia and civil society participating in the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

H.E. Mrs. Bahar Muradova, Chairperson of the State Committee on Family, Children and Women Affairs of the Republic of #Azerbaijan delivered a statement on behalf of the Member States (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye and Uzbekistan) of the Organization of Turkic States (#OTS) during the general discussions segment of the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women. Mrs. Muradova reaffirmed unwavering commitment to the goals and objectives of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (#BDPA) as a comprehensive global policy framework, in particular, to ensuring the full realization of the human rights of women and girls as an inalienable, integral and indivisible part of all human rights and fundamental freedoms. The Chairperson further reiterated the commitment of the Member States of the #OTS to international cooperation and promoting human security, equality between women and men, and empowerment of women, as reflected in the “Turkic World Vision - 2040”.
