➡️ In 2025, the EA will initiate a permit review of metals recycling facilities, focusing on abatement. What does this mean for you? ➡️ Do you operate under a T9 exemption? What do the planned changes mean for you? ➡️ Do you export WEEE and electric motors? What do recent changes mean for you? Be in the know. Find out more about joining the British Metals Recycling Association: recyclemetals.org/join

The cost to metal recyclers of the disposal of hazardous materials is approx. £300-400 per tonne and yet the level of hazardous materials is growing. The British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) is asking the Government to support additional treatment facilities for hazardous and POPs waste whilst encouraging eco-design to design out harmful substances. Read the BMRA’s An Agenda for Change: recyclemetals.org/agenda-for-cha… The BMRA, the voice of the UK metals recycling industry, is calling on the Government to improve business conditions for UK metal recyclers in order that the industry can grow and thrive and, with its proven sustainability credentials, support the Government’s ambition of being net zero by 2050.

Thanks to those members who have entered teams into the BMRA Golf Day being held at The Gleneagles Hotel on Thursday 25 June 2026. The teams are now sold out! Members are still able to join the Summer Dinner, but there is another way to get involved, sponsorship. Sponsorship opportunities. Sponsorship is is a great way to promote your company to fellow BMRA members. Companies feature on the BMRA website, social media channels, as well as exposure on the day itself. Opportunities still available include drinks, golf tees, golf prizes, and golf holes. We also welcome prizes for the President’s raffle, this year in aid of the President's nominated charity, Children with Cancer. Reply to this post or email admin@recyclemetals.org for more information. recyclemetals.org/about-bmra/eve…

The Environment Agency's Deputy Director, Waste and Resources Regulation, Chris Deed, will make the keynote address at the upcoming BMRA Conference 2026.  Mr Deed, who met with BMRA on a recent site visit, will discuss how the industry and the EA can work together to enable a more proportionate, risk-based regulatory framework. The BMRA will announce more speakers over the coming months, as issues arise that affect the industry.  The BMRA Conference 2026 will take place on Thursday 10 September at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon, Warwickshire. The conference will explore the issues most relevant to BMRA member businesses—from day‑to‑day operations to the major challenges and opportunities on the horizon. Whether your interests are technical, legislative, regulatory, or environmental, the conference will provide valuable insights into the matters shaping our industry. recyclemetals.org/newsandarticle…

The energy market continues to present challenges for businesses across the UK, and for those operating within the metals recycling sector, controlling overheads remains as important as ever. With wholesale prices still reacting to global events, changing demand levels, weather patterns, network costs and policy updates, energy procurement is no longer something businesses can afford to leave on autopilot. For BMRA members, having the right strategy in place can make a significant difference to both short-term costs and long-term stability. That’s where @EnexusEnergy can help. As part of your BMRA membership, you have access to expert support designed to help you better understand the market, review your current contracts, and identify opportunities to reduce costs and improve efficiency. recyclemetals.org/newsandarticle…

Today is Earth Day. Recycling metal contributes to the sustainability of the earth through the reduction of: Energy – recycling steel uses 70% less energy than mining and refining virgin ore Emissions – recycling metal emits 80% less CO₂ than production from raw materials. And the safeguarding of: Habitats – recycling one tonne of steel can save one and a half tonnes of iron ore being mined protecting natural habitats and woodland Resources – recycling steel saves 40% of water and 0.5 tonnes of coal per tonne, saving resources. Do your bit, find a BMRA member yard in your area to recycle your metal: recyclemetals.org/recycler-direc…

A report from researchers at Sheffield Hallam University commissioned by the BMRA, found that restrictions to British scrap steel exports – currently being considered by government – endanger thousands of jobs and hamper the economic output of the metals recycling industry by billions. The findings show that an export ban to non-OECD countries could cost the UK nearly £5bn in GVA and over 20,000 jobs – threatening the future of a sector that already contributes £9bn annually and employs more than 15,000 people. As the UK steel industry transitions to electric arc furnaces (EAFs), concerns over scrap availability have prompted calls for export restrictions. But the data shows that even under full EAF adoption, the UK would have plenty of scrap steel to ensure domestic supply while also benefitting from exports. With global demand for recycled steel set to soar, now is the time to support – not stifle – this vital industry.
