#nowplaying#jazz 1968 us mono reissue. More Mingus. Picked this up as I was leaving San Francisco so haven’t fully dug in until now. What a live album! Love how overjoyed Jimmy Lyons (festival founder) is that Mingus is playing too
1) 'Mingus Ah Um' (1960) For me, the finest Mingus album. Every track is superb, it contains many of his masterpieces. and is laden with soul. I've gone through several copies on all formats and I'm not done with it yet (and never will be)
Happy 104th Mr Mingus.
The consummate bassist Paul Chambers was born on this day April 22, 1935. In the late-50s Mr. P.C. made 3 excellent Blue Note leader dates including "Bass On Top" featuring Kenny Burrell, Hank Jones & Art Taylor. Listen or get the Tone Poet Vinyl Edition: bluenote.lnk.to/PaulChambers-B…
Ten Mingus albums:
6) 'Oh Yeah' (released this week 1962)
Mingus plays piano throughout and also vocalises on several tracks, exhibiting an almost dadaesque sense of humour. Featuring Roland Kirk, 'Ecclusiastics' is pure gospel, and the whole record is outstanding.
"It's a funny thing. I never play better in one place than I do somewhere else. I don't care where I'm at, I just play the way I feel."
