Two former employees at the Lush Cosmetics location in the Annapolis Mall said they were fired for attempting to start a union at the store.
Theo Boswell and Jesse Epling said they filed unfair labor practice charges against Lush after they were terminated in early April.
“It was so out of the blue. I was like, flash-banged. I had … a clean record with Lush,” Boswell told the Capital Gazette. “I had just been offered the opportunity to move to full time.”
Talk of potentially unionizing the Annapolis Mall location came around the same time that workers unionized in mid-March at the Harbor East Lush in Baltimore. Coby Mayo made a game-ending throwing error that resulted in an Orioles loss against the Marlins. Four days later, he came through in the clutch with the biggest hit of his nascent big league career — a go-ahead three-run homer against the Yankees to deliver Baltimore one of its best wins of the season.
Mayo was asked how he mentally overcame the error, and he credited his support system, including his family and his girlfriend. But it was his dog, Fin, who got the biggest shoutout.
“My dog doesn’t know I made an error. He doesn’t know I struck out four straight at-bats,” he said with a smile. “This game does a lot to the mentals and can have a lot on our minds going to sleep at night, putting our head on the pillow. As much as guys want to flush it sometimes, it’s tough to when you leave the field. So I think sometimes you need the people in your corner.
“My dog loves me, so it doesn’t matter what happens. He’s always going to be there for me, too.”
