The only former Soviet state to qualify for the 2026 World Cup has unveiled its kit with a gloriously mad video: Uzbekistan’s shirts and shorts come to life and run around Tashkent on their own.

Zelensky inviting Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to Kyiv in what has been staged like an official visit of a foreign leader is a deliberate affront to Lukashenko who has just said he’d be ready to meet Zelensky “anywhere in the world”. Gives an idea of who is driving the latest Belarus-focused escalation.

Accidental diplomat Kaja Kallas is doing extraordinary damage to the EU, but what most Westerners don’t grasp is she’s basically a Soviet nepo-baby of a very recognisable type: privileged, haughty, cosmopolitan, liberal, hyper-ideological and absolutely convinced of her own moral superiority and intelligence. You can easily find loads of these people in Moscow too, if you move in certain circles, especially around bars and restaurants at Patriki or Trubnaya, but they have tended to gravitate towards media or the corporate world rather than politics. Her father, Siim Kallas, spent 18 years in the Communist Party and held senior positions in Soviet Estonia, including running the party's propaganda apparatus, before opportunistically reinventing himself as a liberal (like many in Russia itself) once it became obvious the USSR was toast under Gorby. There's a lot of misunderstanding about post-Soviet elites because it's generally assumed there was some clean rupture, but that wasn't the case at all. There wasn’t much lustration and large parts of the old elite simply changed flags while keeping their old networks alive.

Kaja Kallas who - I kid you not - is supposed to be the EU's top diplomat, just described China as a "disease," specifically "cancer." 🤦‍♂️ Just as the entire rest of the world - including Trump's US - are deciding to re-engage with China, the EU prefers to insult them. Why would China be "cancer"? Because, in Kallas' own description, their companies are more competitive and this forces what she describes as a binary choice for the EU: "morphine" - subsidize EU companies - or "chemo", become more hostile to Chinese companies. Or maybe, just maybe, it's not binary, and if there's any cancer eating away at Europe's future, it's precisely Kallas' mindset - the reflex to call "disease" what is simply someone else doing a better job.

I just got around to watching Kallas' full remarks - she went even further than "disease", describing China's economic policies as "a cancer" "If you have a very difficult disease, if you have a cancer, you have 2 choices. Either increase the morphine or you start chemotherapy"

For a historian, Ms Applebaum's argument here is essentially ahistorical because the idea that the post-1945 European order was defined by borders never changing through force is simply not true NATO-member Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974 and still occupies the northern third. Yugoslavia violently broke apart through a series of wars in the 1990s with Kosovo recognised by much of the West after the US-led intervention, despite it legally being part of Serbia. The post-Soviet space saw conflicts in Transnistria, Abkhazia, Karabakh and South Ossetia which de facto changed borders. The reality is that the so-called "rules-based order" is just a catchphrase.
Tymofiy Mylovanov@Mylovanov

Applebaum: Russia invaded Ukraine knowing it was breaking the post-1945 rule that borders in Europe must not be changed by force. This war is not only about Ukraine, it is a fault line between the democratic world and the autocratic world. 2/

Nothing signals Zelensky’s lame duck status more than friends of his former chief of staff Yermak failing to collect enough money to pay for his bail. People and banks are afraid of being subject to audits by fiscal monitoring agencies if they do so. The president appears to have no leverage.

Holocaust researcher Marta Havryshko gets put on the Myrotvorets hit list for criticizing the Ukrainian state’s support for neo-Nazis and glorification of Nazi collaborators. Мeanwhile, Zelensky’s friend Yermak — despite endless allegations of wartime corruption and siphoning off state funds — somehow doesn’t make the cut. Why is that?

Since yesterday, all of Zelensky’s bot farms have been put on high alert and are grinding overtime. Good thing Hungary unfroze those €90 billion — otherwise there’d be no cash left to pay the trolls cheerleading for an endless war in the interests of the ruling class and the merchants of death.

After her interview with Tucker Carlson, @IuliiaMendel was added to the Myrotvorets database. I only have one question — why did it take them so long? I’ve been there for a year and a half already.😅

Memorial of Georgian Warrior Heroes were made between 1981-85 by Georgian sculptor Giorgi Ochiauri and placed around the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Vake Park in Tbilisi. In 2009 the idiot president of Georgia moved it to another city, pretty much threw them away.
