On this year’s International Nurses Day theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies,” the MHPU reiterates its urgent call for safe staffing ratios, fair workloads, and stronger protections for nurses across the health system. Unsafe staffing continues to fuel burnout, workplace hazards, and exhaustion among nurses, directly affecting both worker wellbeing and patient safety. Chronic understaffing has also resulted in excessive overtime (OT), long working hours, and inadequate rest, placing unsustainable physical and mental strain on nurses. Nurses cannot continue to carry the burden of a strained health system through endless overtime and unsafe workloads. Ensuring safe staffing, fair compensation for OT, adequate rest, and healthy working conditions is essential to retaining skilled nurses and strengthening the healthcare system for the future. #Nursesday2026

Healthcare workers are being pushed beyond safe limits — working long hours, six days a week, with inadequate rest. Burnout is a serious reality, causing physical and mental exhaustion. This not only harms workers, but also compromises the quality and safety of patient care. Fatigue increases the risk of errors, accidents, and preventable harm. We demand safe staffing ratios and adequate rest periods for all healthcare workers. #LabourDay2026 #safestaffing @geelaali @MoHmv @min_mohst @HomeMinistrymv @presidencymv @MMuizzu @PSIasiapacific @ILOColombo

This Lab Professionals Week, the Maldives Health Professionals Union (MHPU) recognizes the critical role of laboratory professionals—the backbone of accurate diagnosis, disease surveillance, and patient safety. Every test result that guides treatment, every detection that prevents an outbreak, and every data point that informs public health decisions begins in the laboratory. Yet, the contributions of lab professionals remain challenged by the systemic barriers that undermine the quality of care and health and well-being of the worker; •24/7 on call duty in the peripheral health centers - managing emergencies and OPDs, the strain in heavier during outbreaks •Working alone on call 24/7 for prolonged periods of time leads to exhaustion, burnout and increases errors that compromises patient safety. •Capped overtime at 10% as per the new pay standards – but forced to work beyond without pay. •Expatriate medical lab professionals excluded from the public sector pay framework MHPU calls: •Safe and adequately resourced working environments •Fair recognition and career progression pathways •Protection from occupational hazards •Continued investment in laboratory systems and workforce development •Implementing new pay framework for expatriate workers We stand in solidarity with all laboratory professionals across the Maldives. #decentwork #qualitycare #labweek2026 @PSIasiapacific @presidencymv @MoHmv @HomeMinistrymv

A resilient healthcare system begins with a protected, respected, and empowered workforce. As we mark World Health Day 2026, we highlight the urgent need to uphold the rights of health professionals- including safe working conditions, fair compensation, manageable workloads, and access to mental health support. Health workers are the backbone of our healthcare system. Yet too often, they face challenges that compromise both their well-being and the quality of care they provide. @presidencymv @MoHmv #WorldHealthDay #StandWithScience

Precious five lives lost and more injured. Trapped in a horrific situation-with no escape. They have a name and they belong to a family. Someone's son/father/husband/friend/colleague. There have been concerns raised in the past regarding the safety of accommodation blocks provided for migrant workers-with very little attention from policy and public. Employment regulations specifies the minimum requirements of accommodation blocks for migrant populations the accommodation blocks/living quarters is an extension to thier work premises. Hence the safety of accommodation blocks/living quarters falls under the Occupational Safety and Health requirements. But who cares? Election campaigns must proceed- they don't count as votes to win position and power. Our economy and people benefit from them;but they aren't equal to being treated as equal to us. @MaldivesHPU @MoHEmv @governmentmv @MMuizzu @pnc_secretariat @MDPSecretariat We aren't progressing as a society unless we stand for the most vulnerable populations in the community. Justice is not selective. Human Rights are universal. mihaaru.com/news/155331?fb…

The salary for all employees in the National Pay Framework is structured based on a standard requirement of eight working hours per day and six days per week. It is imperative that the standards established under the National Pay Framework are implemented uniformly and equitably to all employees Assigning inconsistent working hours to different employees, in contradiction to these standards, serves as an impediment to ensuring fairness and justice in the workplaces. #EndDiscrimination #DecentWork #QualityCare @PSIasiapacific @governmentmv @MvSpokesperson @presidencymv @MMuizzu @MoFmv @MoosaZameer @MoHEmv @cscmaldives @igmhmv @HMH_mv @KRHmv @urh_mv @drasmhospital @aeh_mv @MoHmv
