No one in America really cares anymore about what happens to "the other side of the debate" because there's nothing left to debate at this point. We view each other as enemies, not debating partners. We don't even view each other as Americans. People aren't looking for an objective set of standards that everyone will abide by because no one believes there's any possible set of standards that could ever reconcile the two diametrically opposed visions for what society should look like on the Left and Right. What they want is for their side to win and the other side to lose. They're not interested in finding a way to get along with an enemy they see as dishonest, dysfunctional, degenerate, and dangerous. The time for reconciliation has long since passed. There's no possibility for peaceful coexistence, so any appeals to principle, procedure, or precedent in the abstract are totally meaningless to them. "Why would I be concerned with fairness towards an enemy I am at war with in all but name?" they ask themselves. This is why the old conservative and libertarian arguments just don't carry the same weight they used to anymore. Too much of the Right has come to view the Left in the same exact way the Left itself has pretty much always viewed the Right: an evil that must be destroyed by any means necessary. Personally, whatever sentimental or empathetic feelings I once held for the other side are totally gone. I can't bring myself to care for those who have repeatedly demonstrated that they would celebrate my death. There are now millions who feel the same exact way. None of them are concerned whatsoever about appeals to procedural, proceduralist, utilitarian, or individualistic arguments for why we shouldn't systematically crush the Left with every tool at our disposal. The short-term future is just one giant power struggle while we all try to pretend otherwise.
