Proton radiation therapy has been a game changer for Childhood Cancer. A recent Mayo Clinic article highlighted why it is so valuable to use in cancer treatments with the least late term side effects by avoiding radiating good tissues and organs. Unfortunately, Congress cut the Accelerating Kids’ Access to Care Act from the end of the year package (CR). Why? Who knows? The cost is nearly nothing, and the benefits are tremendous for children needing the therapy. It allows those on Medicaid to travel to other states to get most cancer treatments. Proton Therapy is only one example of treatments that may not be available in their home state, but it's a good one. As of today, the states that do not have Proton Beam Therapy facilities include: Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Imagine the number of Medicaid Kids living in these states who will face mountains of red tape, delays, and even refusals to get their lifesaving treatments. This needs to be corrected in the new 119th Congress as quickly as possible. Sadly, this is only one of the childhood cancer initiatives affected by the last minute cuts to the (CR). Others include Give Kids A Chance Act and the PRV Voucher (Creating Hope act) initiative created in 2012. Both of these encourage drug development for childhood cancers and require no federal funding. Those who helped cut these initiatives need to lead the way in correcting their errors quickly. Children fighting cancer can't afford to wait another year or two...
