Reeves knows full well that Labour’s misleadingly named “mansion tax” is morally reprehensible, unfair and economically illiterate. But to satisfy the dumb socialist spite of her MPs she will go through with it regardless. Like their VAT on independent schools policy it will raise no meaningful revenue at all and will probably cost more than it makes. So if someone buys a property for £2m with what’s left after half their income has gone in income tax and NI, they must then pay a thumping £153k in stamp duty (£253k if a second property) to the State. But in addition to then paying the highest band of council tax every year, they must also pay thousands more each year just for owning it before the State gobbles up another 40% when they die. And of course the threshold for the “mansion tax” will no doubt be reduced in value over time so as with inheritance tax, more and more home owners are fleeced. It’s obscene.

Mahmood has finally said the quiet part out loud: Labour’s “crackdown” is just a staging post to “go much bigger” on bringing more refugees here through new legal routes. The tough talk is temporary theatre, the expansion is the permanent destination – overseen by a Home Office that cannot clear today’s backlog, let alone run extra visa schemes. You don’t “fix” a broken system by bolting on more routes, more bureaucracy and more permanent migration before you’ve restored basic control. That’s not reform, it’s a bait‑and‑switch on the voters who were promised order, not an open‑ended ratchet.
