Sitting here, in front of a church I’ve never even stepped foot in, in front of a church a week ago I’d never even have considered going to, some feelings are welling up. Anxiety, fear, hope, anger, peace, all feelings happening simultaneously. The events of this week have changed the world, and I’m not immune from that. Evil has been seen and it cannot be denied. So as I sit here (30 minutes early obviously 😂) I reflect on why it can take something like this to promote and require change. Charlie preached for all to come to God, I never listened before, I agreed on nearly everything else he spoke on but just didn’t think that part applied to me. Of course it did, and I won’t ever forget him, every time I pull up to a church, possibly this one, I will remember Charlie.

Dr. Walt Galicich, a neurosurgeon, also gave an update on Sophia’s condition. “I’m gonna be blunt, Sophia is still in critical condition in the intensive care unit. There’s a chance that she may be the third fatality of this event,” he said. “But the door’s been opened a little bit and there’s some rays of hope shining through.” When he first met Sophia last Wednesday, the pressure in her brain was very high, he said. Sophia was shot in her left temporal lobe, and the bullet is still lodged in her right occipital lobe. Part of Sophia’s skull was removed to give her brain room to swell. “If you had told me at this juncture ten days later that we’d be standing here with any ray of hope, I would’ve said it would take a miracle,” Galicich added. The bullet injured several critical vessels in Sophia’s brain, but Galicich said her scans look about as good as can be expected. She remains in the pediatric ICU, where she has been in a medically induced coma and even suffered a stroke. But the pressure in her brain is improving, and medical personnel have allowed her to be awake for short periods of time. There are several rays of hope, Galicich said. Sophia has been purposeful on the left side of her body, there has been slight movement in her right leg, and she’s been opening her eyes. The pressure in her brain has also improved, and Galicich is hopeful it will remain at a healthy level. “I don’t know what her permanent deficits are gonna be, but we’re a little bit more optimistic that she’s gonna survive,” he said. “Sophia is strong, Sophia is fighting,” Forchas added. “And Sophia is going to win this fight for all of humanity.”
