William Hill's ante-post book for the 1979 Derby, showing liabilities for each horse. Only credit clients bets are shown and not the huge volume of betting the firm would accommodate on course and in their betting shops...

@SimonNott Yes Simon , from a betting point of view i wonder who could possibly benefit from laying plenty of small bets only ( at the wrong price ) ?🤔

Affordability Checks - Imagine at the point of sale when buying a gold bracelet or a Rolex, or a high end meal at a restaurant, or your fourth pint on a night out, being asked for your bank details and proof of income. It’s all bollocks isn’t it. Why have we stood for it so long?

If you had told me 10 years ago that the regulator of Gambling would impose on the industry untested measures which all corners of the industry lawyers Bookmakers punters analysts journalists, are all telling them these things simply cannot work, and will end up causing a lot more harm to people by shoving the problem to the black market Add to the list not one, but two government regulators currently opposing their measures I have always viewed the gambling commission with the greatest of scepticism -the difference between these people in Birmingham and, for example, the British horse racing authority is a desire on the latter to do the right thing Whereas the gambling commission is embarked on an obsessive path of self worth. Destroying everything in its path.

“The checks… will be made in a collaborative way with industry” Anyone thought about asking customers what they want? Or is the GC relying on bookmakers representing their customers?

Comedy gold , the anti gambling commission talking about " the real world " has to be on a par with their moto of " keeping gambling fair and open" and one of the oncourse bookmaker associations motto of " keeping you informed " YOU COULDNT MAKE IT UP ! 😂😂😂

@robbo__85 @Southwell_Races @racingoncourse You are trying to compare apples and pears - I (or any bookmaker) can’t make people bet anything - we only offer options and the customer is free to bet wherever (or not) they like. If we were all 1/4 then punters would be worse off - especially the win only punters

@racingoncourse @RacesNow_ Simple solution , the useless anti gambling commission could introduce traditional place terms as part of the oncourse betting license,of course the usual suspects will then bet win only , but at least its better than what we have now !

Michael and I do disagree on the point of 1/5 and a quarter in 16-21 runner handicaps but, he is right that punters should shop around. On course bookmakers are a vital part of the racing experience and long may it continue. 95% of the ring at Ascot was 1/5 and I asked Michael to talk on the matter as he would be willing to do so. I hope awareness on place term fractions has been increased.

@racingoncourse @RacesNow_ I go racing maybe 10-15 times a year. The bookmakers are all slaves to the Exchange. Prices all locked under Betfair, all move in unison. It really is like synchronized bookmaking. All feared of being bigger than Betfair for even a millisecond!!
