I didn't have a PlayStation as a kid, so I didn't play FF7 until well into adulthood. I have no nostalgia for it and no clouded childhood memories of it, and I still think it's one of the most beautiful RPGs ever made. Square-Enix showed massive conceit by remaking it.

Digital Foundry was super excited about the DLSS 5 announcement (because it was awesome) so they published a "FIRST LOOK" showing it off and praising it. Then the angry anti-AI mob came for them and ripped them apart and they got bullied into backpedalling. "We should have waited before posting our first round of coverage. We should have waited to see reactions from the audience." Translation: "We should have waited to see what the consensus mob opinion was before we posted our own individual thoughts." This is the reason why games suck these days. The mob bullies people into groupthink. People get so scared of giving their take they wait until the "Consensus approved opinion™️" is formed before they speak. Nobody wants to risk having the first/independent thought and risk being yelled at by the angry mob. It's super unfortunate, and the backpedalling here makes it worse because it signals cowardice and the majority of the mob doesn't care anyways, they'll find a new thing to hate.

We spoke to multiple game devs and all of them hate DLSS 5: "What the fuck, Nvidia?!" One person currently attending college and studying game development, told Kotaku that after seeing DLSS 5, "it feels like there is no future for me." kotaku.com/we-spoke-to-ga…

Not enough people talk about how unpleasant vibecoding is. The best analogy I can think of is driving. It's cool that we can just hop in a car and drive to the store. It's a lot faster than walking. And yet, it's so stressful and infuriating, we had to invent a new word just to describe its effect on people: "road rage." AI-assisted coding is the same. It's so much faster--there's no going back to coding everything by hand, the equivalent of walking everywhere. And yet it's incredibly annoying and stressful. It's characterized by annoying delays between requests, time-wasting misunderstandings, blatant lying, and absurd overconfidence. Hopefully this gets better as models improve.

@BRobo82 Be honest: which one comes across more as a shy, introverted, unconfident, unassuming young woman? The DLSS 5 version of Grace looks like an ultra-confident supermodel. Shit looks ridiculous Even if it's just different lighting, the model clearly wasn't designed with it in mind

So Alex Battaglia from DF and a whole bunch of gamers are outraged because Grace’s lips are a millimeter larger and the original artist wouldn’t wanted that, yet Black Mesa or other 'remasters' not made by the original creators are considered amazing? Pinnacle of double standards

I'm genuinely not sure how to explain the concept of 'immersion' to people who seem to exclusively evaluate games by graphics, and graphics by which screenshot looks marginally better if you set them up side-by-side with a slider, as I'm not sure these people actually play games.

@BowsersaurusRex @Shpeshal_Nick That's not even what happened here. Are you retarded? They're walking back their opinion because they see the general public disagrees with them and pointed out flaws. The death threats are not only irrelevant but a misdirect. Everyone has gotten death threats online. Boohoo.

I really hope I'm misunderstanding Rich here because if he's saying "We were excited and liked it, but seeing how everyone hates it, I wish we waited so we could have hated it too" is uh...not a very good look and kinda tarnishes almost everything else they've done previously?

Just wanted to mention: I watch @digitalfoundry regularly. I saw their DLSS 5 video when they posted it. It was actually the first time I saw DLSS 5. While I was surprised they liked it - since in my opinion it did not look good - that's one of the reasons I watch other people's shows. If I only wanted to hear my own opinions of things, I'd just watch my own channel :) I know it's stressful when a large percentage of your audience is mad about something. I can absolutely understand why Digital Foundry wanted to backpedal a bit on their initial strongly-favorable coverage. But for that same reason, I felt like I should take this opportunity to say: I watch Digital Foundry regularly. I was happy to see their initial coverage of DLSS 5. I had no problem with it, and I couldn't care less if their opinion about it differs from mine. If anything, that's a plus. And furthermore, it seems like both @dark1x and @Dachsjaeger weren't as enthusiastic about it. That actually makes me look forward to more coverage on the channel, since having both people who like and who dislike DLSS 5 should make for some great videos!

I don't need your permission to choose what I eat. That's it. That's the post. But since some of you apparently need more — let me explain this real slow. I mentioned I drink raw milk from a cow I know, on a farm I trust, raised the way food was raised for ten thousand years before a government agency decided you were too stupid to make that call yourself. The response? "You're dangerous." "You're going to kill someone." "How dare you say that publicly." Let me be crystal clear about something: I don't care. Not because I'm reckless. Because I'm free. This is the same country where you can legally smoke cigarettes, drink yourself into liver failure, eat fast food three times a day, and wash it down with enough high-fructose corn syrup to dissolve a transmission. All of that is perfectly legal. None of that gets a public intervention. But I drink milk from a cow I've personally vetted — and I'm a menace to society. You know what's actually dangerous? The idea that adults need a federal agency to decide what they're allowed to put in their own body. That's the thing that should terrify you. I'm not asking you to drink raw milk. I'm not telling you it's right for you. I'm not dismissing that there are people — immunocompromised, pregnant, very young — for whom it's a legitimate consideration. I am a healthy adult. I did my research. I know my source. I made my choice. The moment we accept that the government gets to override that — for our own good, of course — we've handed over something we're not getting back. And it won't stop at milk. It never stops at milk. One commenter told me "anyone raised on a ranch would never drink raw milk." Interesting theory. Completely wrong. Farm families have been drinking it for generations. Their kids have lower rates of asthma and allergies than city kids. The Amish have allergy rates so low that a doctor who set up a free clinic near their community couldn't find patients. But sure — the people closest to the source are the most afraid of it. Makes perfect sense. Here's the thing about freedom: it only means something when it includes choices other people disagree with. Easy choices don't need protecting. Comfortable choices don't need defending. Freedom exists precisely for the moments when someone looks at what you're doing and says "you shouldn't be allowed to do that." That's when it counts. Drink your ultra-pasteurized, hormone-disrupted, inflammatory dairy-flavored beverage from a factory farm if you want. That's your right. I'll respect it. Respect mine.

@AutismCapital The problem is originally they made it sound like a new 3D lighting/rendering technology. Then in the second video they make it sound like it's just a real time AI filter processing a 2D image after the fact. That's quite a difference...

No, I'm not. The subject from the very beginning has been the suspiciously similar arguments from all the AI defenders. Opinions by definition cannot be misinformation. It's a category error. When I say Nvidia's new tech demo looks like AI slop and it's an indication that Nvidia is going to try to push another generation with no performance uplift and instead try to push more AI generation That's just leading to making gaming systems unaffordable. I am not making a statement of fact. I am giving my opinion. The only way that opinion is misinformation is if you think I'm lying about my opinion.

You know, this is one of the primary problems with AI companies. They are so convinced that they're right about everything that any criticism at all is just ignored. They're just so out of touch that they have no idea that there's an entire movement that is sick of it.
