The Southern Poverty Law Center is facing an 11 count federal indictment. Federal prosecutors say the organization secretly funneled more than $3 million in donor money to individuals tied to the Ku Klux Klan, Aryan Nations, National Alliance, National Socialist Movement, American Front, and others connected to Unite the Right. Prosecutors also say fictitious entities, covert bank accounts, and false statements to federally insured banks were used as part of the scheme. Ohio Supreme Court Orders Delaware County Board of Elections to Hold Residency Hearing for Melanie Leneghan Court Applies ‘Rule of Necessity’ to Overcome Recusals Ahead of May Primary COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Supreme Court on Friday ordered the Delaware County Board of Elections to immediately hold a hearing on a residency challenge filed against Melanie Leneghan, who is seeking election to the Ohio Republican Party State Central Committee. In a per curiam opinion, the court granted a writ of mandamus directing board members Edward D. Helvey, Peg L. Watkins and Steven R. Cuckler to “proceed forthwith to hear Dunn’s protest and challenge against Leneghan.” Velva Dunn, a Delaware County Republican Party Central Committee member, filed the protest against Leneghan’s candidacy petition and a separate challenge to her voter registration in February. Dunn alleges Leneghan does not meet residency requirements to be registered to vote in Delaware County or to run for the state central committee position from that county. Leneghan is also a member of the Delaware County Board of Elections. She filed her candidacy petition in December 2025 for the May 5, 2026, primary election. The board had scheduled a hearing for March 5. It did not take place after Helvey and Watkins, the Democratic members, recused themselves citing concerns about the appearance of bias. Leneghan, a Republican, also recused herself. That left the board without a quorum. The Supreme Court ruled that state law requires the board to conduct a quasi-judicial hearing on such protests. It applied the common-law “rule of necessity,” which requires officials to participate when recusals would prevent any action. “We appreciate the position of Helvey and Watkins that their participation in hearing Dunn’s protest and challenge could be understood by some as conveying a perception of bias against or in favor of their fellow board member,” the opinion states. “But however ‘disagreeable’ it may be for Helvey and Watkins to participate in the hearing, it remains their ‘duty’ to do so.” Justice Patrick Fischer dissented. The court noted the May 5 primary is only weeks away, leaving no adequate remedy through ordinary legal channels if the hearing is delayed further. The board must now schedule and conduct the hearing promptly. The outcome will decide whether Leneghan’s name appears on the primary ballot. #Ohio #OhioNews #BreakingNews #Politics
