A History of Gold and Silver In The Modern Era This article chronicles the transformation of gold and silver in the modern era through 4 interwoven narratives: (1) the dramatic evolution of monetary systems as political and economic decisions dismantled metallic monetary standards, (2) the explosive expansion of industrial and technological applications, (3) the scientific discoveries that revealed nanoscale properties and began a revolution, and (4) the market forces that drove both gold and silver to record prices – even as their purposes fundamentally changed. HPC centers will be the first homes for QC. How do we get them ready? ⚛️ This is what @Alice__Bob's Rémi de La Vieuville and Laurent Prost explored at the first QUEST-IS, an international gathering of quantum players at Paris-Saclay, one of France’s main hubs for innovation. 🌌 Rémi took the stage to share how we see things: 🔹 Designing quantum-ready rooms. 🏠 Quantum computers need specific conditions, from temperature to vibrations to electromagnetic noise. We shared a first look at Alice & Bob’s installation guide for HPC centers, which covers the concrete steps needed to measure and qualify the room, and turn existing infrastructure into quantum-ready environments. ✅ 🔹Quantum must fit into existing workflows. 🔧🖥️ For quantum computing to be used at scale, it will need to slot into the orchestration tools HPC centers already use. Scheduling is a big one: quantum jobs need to integrate into the same systems that manage classical compute. Our collaboration with STFC Hartree Centre to integrate cat qubits into SLURM, the most widely used workload manager in the world, is exactly for that. 🔹 FTQC compilation is a new language. 🧠⚡️ Unlike the NISQ models some people are used to, the compilation for tomorrow’s useful quantum computers has an entirely different execution model. Like learning a new language. (Dive deeper in Rémi’s post: linkedin.com/posts/remi-de-…). The goal is that quantum computers become “just” another compute resource inside HPC centers, slotting into familiar workflows and tackling problems classical computing cannot reach. 🚀 #QuantumComputing #HPC #CatQubits

The Cross Of Gold Speech Of William Jennings Bryan “… you shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns. You shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold.” – “Cross Of Gold” excerpt, 1896 Bryan’s address at the Democratic National Convention of 1896, considered one of the greatest political speeches in American history, electrified the convention and is generally credited with earning him the nomination for president – as the youngest presidential nominee of a major party in American history, at the age of 36, a position that he still holds today. read more - briandcolwell.com/the-cross-of-g… #gold #silver

A History of Gold and Silver In The Early-Modern Era This article examines the history of gold and silver during the early-modern era, from 1500-1800 CE, a period that witnessed the most dramatic transformation in global precious metals flows in human history, as Spanish conquistadors stumbled upon mountain ranges made of Silver, Portuguese traders channeled West African Gold into European markets, and new refining technologies enabled extraction from ores that earlier generations would have deemed worthless. read more - briandcolwell.com/a-history-of-g… #gold #silver

A History of Gold and Silver In The Middle Ages This article traces the history of Gold and Silver in the Middle Ages, revealing that the medieval monetary world was characterized by: (1) Byzantine Gold’s slow decline from unquestioned supremacy to complete extinction; (2) Western Europe’s centuries-long Silver economy gradually evolving into sophisticated Gold coinage systems; (3) Islamic Dinars’ domination of Mediterranean and Indian Ocean trade; and (4) Religious and military conflicts paradoxically accelerating economic integration by forcing cultural contact and metal transfers read more - briandcolwell.com/a-history-of-g… #gold #silver

A History Of Gold And Silver In The Ancient Era This article examines how ancient societies discovered, extracted, valued, and used Gold and Silver – from the Chalcolithic period through the early Byzantine era. It traces the technical evolution of mining and metallurgy, the development of monetary systems, and the role these two metals played in shaping political power, revealing that Gold and Silver consistently served five interconnected functions during the ancient era: (1) markers of social hierarchy, (2) symbols of divine or royal authority, (3) instruments of trade, (4) stores of value that could survive economic collapse, and (5) enablement of military expansion, with societies that controlled Gold or Silver sources gaining military and economic advantages over their neighbors. read more - briandcolwell.com/a-history-of-g… #gold #silver

58 Things You Might Not Know About Silver It’s too bad silver has been labeled “Poor Man’s Gold,” because it’s far more useful than gold. Unlike gold, which largely sits in vaults and jewelry, silver works, and is embedded into the infrastructure of modern life—in every touchscreen, solar cell, and circuit board. He planted more than just crops — he planted a future. 🍅 Mangale is a hard-working man from Nepal who had tried everything to provide financially for his family. He even went out of his country searching for work, but it brought even more difficulties. When Mangale found Convoy of Hope's Agriculture program, he embarked on a new journey that would equip him to grow his own produce — and provide a sustainable living. “I am grateful for how the organization has supported and taught us on the modern techniques of cultivating fruits and vegetables," Managale shared. When we come together, we can provide more farmers with the resources they need to thrive. Learn more at h.ope.is/3XJrGMO. #agriculture #convoyofhope #nepal

What Is Faith? The Foundation Of Society In an era marked by declining institutional trust, political polarization, and fraying social bonds, we find ourselves grappling with questions as to what holds societies together. While economists point to markets, political scientists to institutions, and technologists to networks, there may be a more elemental force at work—one that predates all these modern constructs, yet remains essential to their functioning: Faith. read more - briandcolwell.com/what-is-faith-… #faith

Is Faith A Virtue Or A Passion? Why are we talking about faith today? Because faith plays a significant role in shaping both our individual and collective community and world views. Not only that, but one’s faith, expressed collectively, supports the development of group virtues and social capital – those core requirements of a sustainable society. As said by Bertrand de Jouvenel: “only transcendental ties of affection [can] hold the human race together in a world-wide society.” read more - briandcolwell.com/is-faith-a-vir… #faith

A History Of Silver In The Modern Era Silver’s journey through the Modern Era represents one of history’s most dramatic commodity transformations. For four millennia, Silver served as humanity’s monetary foundation—the metal by which empires measured wealth, settled trade debts, and stabilized currencies. Yet, within 171 years, from 1800 to 1971, Silver lost this ancient role entirely, only to emerge as something far more essential – an irreplaceable industrial commodity powering the technologies that define contemporary civilization. read more - briandcolwell.com/a-history-of-s… #Silver

A History Of Silver In The Early-Modern Era Between 1500 and 1800, Silver transformed from a regionally circulated precious metal into the world’s first truly global currency—a transformation so complete that Spanish “pieces of eight” circulated simultaneously in Ottoman bazaars, Chinese trading ports, and English colonial settlements. This was not mere geographic expansion of an existing commodity system, but rather the creation of an entirely new economic architecture that connected previously isolated markets across three oceans.
