Last week I had the honour of delivering the annual Bell Lecture at Carleton University in Ottawa. My message: Ukraine is winning. Democracy, diversity, and patriotism are its greatest strengths — and ours.

Grateful to be in New York Friday night and honoured to receive the Heroes of Democracy Award from @RenewDemocracy. When they lived behind the Iron Curtain, Ukrainians and people throughout the USSR looked to America as the City on the Hill - the foremost fighter for freedom in the world. That inspiring leadership is so important to cherish and remember. Because a world in which America supports tyranny abroad and suppresses freedom at home is a world where democracy everywhere is weaker.  Standing firm for Ukraine and for liberal democracy everywhere has never mattered more.

Honorée d'avoir été à New York vendredi soir pour recevoir le prix Heroes of Democracy de @RenewDemocracy. Lorsqu'ils vivaient derrière le Rideau de fer, les Ukrainiens et les peuples de toute l'URSS percevaient les États-Unis comme étant la Cité sur la colline — le champion de la liberté dans le monde. Ce leadership inspirant mérite d'être chéri et rappelé, car un monde dans lequel les États-Unis appuient la tyrannie à l'étranger et répriment la liberté en Amérique est un monde où la démocratie partout est affaiblie. Défendre fermement l'Ukraine et la démocratie libérale partout dans le monde n'a jamais été aussi important.

Honored to celebrate Michael Sandel at the Berggruen Prize ceremony at Harvard. Few thinkers have done more to ask the questions democracy needs most urgently to answer - questions about fairness, belonging, merit, and what we owe each other as citizens.
