After a 20-year agreement in 2022 was met with widespread scrutiny and public protesting from both the Men's and Women's Canadian National Teams, it has been announced that a restructured agreement has been reached between Canada Soccer and Canadian Soccer Media and Entertainment (formerly Canadian Soccer Business). Rather than fixed annual payments, the new agreement is structured around revenue sharing and is accompanied by guaranteed annual minimums.

@alexanderupert @PeteSchaad Yet we never hear of the three MLS clubs needing an annual renewal. Clearly CONCACAF sees the "exceptional circumstances" as essentially permanent here. Not that you'll acknowledge it this time, but why hasn't this come up in the otherwise well-reported Caps survival saga?

Not being negative, just being a realist. MLS doesn’t care about Vancouver & Montreal. The exchange rate is a 30% hit, next year’s Aug-May schedule switch will be a big challenge.
VAN & MTL selling MLS franchise stake, and reinvesting some of it in the CPL by joining…

Odd that all the sponsors don't seem aware of this and it hasn't come up once in the Whitecaps stadium saga - you'd think it would be massively relevant to potentially building a new one (or to the long-term lease they signed there a decade ago)

Now it does and once the 3 clubs will need to renew their sanction - they will be denied by CONCACAF just like the Ottawa Fury was
The rule is clear under article 73, clubs must compete in their own country leagues

@alexanderupert @PeteSchaad Come on. MLS clearly has some kind of blanket ongoing exception (same with article 9) or no one would invest or commit to long-term sponsorships. TFC reducing their income and expenses by like 500% would be so bad for the game here that it's considered exceptional enough

@canmnt @PeteSchaad Article 73 exception was granted on security grounds. In the 70s, sectarian violence made away teams unwilling to travel while neutral venues were unsustainable. Playing Ireland restored safe & regular competition

After that, if CanPL is even still around, it will keep being an "eventually" that never comes. We're a unique case and it would hurt more than help

@canmnt @PeteSchaad The NZ league isnt fully pro so the exception applies here, same with DPMM - Singapore league is semi-pro/Malaysia is pro
In thw case of CPL/MLS - CPL is fully pro, so Article 73 of FIFA applies here and eventually, it will be fully enforced.

@PeteSchaad @alexanderupert This is not a real factor IMO despite often being cited. DPMM in Brunei just switched from the Singaporean to the Malaysian league. Auckland just joined the A-League a year or two ago. Exceptions can and will be made

@alexanderupert FIFA won’t sanction cross border leagues anymore either. MLS was a grandfathered situation. The push was always for soccer sovereignty.

How hooped is Toronto? Opinions vary, but I’ve listened to every single word of this news conference involving (at least!) rampant corruption, organized crime, & unspeakable violence against its own citizens/taxpayers, & other officers - & I find it hard to believe that not one single Toronto politician will demand or suggest that the city’s Police Chief simply can’t be trusted to continue in his role. That’s….a problem.

By my count this puts BC Place with 8 concerts in there for 2026. Last year they had 3, 2024 they had 4 and a 2 day concert festival in there. Again not sure where all these concerts/events are magically appearing to make up for the Caps leaving.
