At 80-years-old, Canadian coffee shop owner Ted Martindale believes he's done what few would attempt much less succeed. He says he's baked the largest carrot cake in the world. The nearly 6,000 pound cake, built at his small British Colombia community of Quesnel, is currently being reviewed by Guinness. In celebration of his 80th birthday on March 25th, he invited the community to join in the festivities at the senior center where he unveiled the cake. His wife told him no one would show up, but the whole town did. There was no parking left downtown. It was a month-long process to make it because it required making 432 sheet cakes, and took 14 hours and 12 people to put together. Take it with a grain of salt but Iran claims it used a new air defense system to shoot down the 2 US planes - and will allow it to "definitely achieve full control" over it's airspace as American as Israeli forces continue to hammer the country. KitKat is asking for the publics help after thieves made off with 12 tons of the company's chocolate - prompting the launch of a new tracking tool to help locate the missing shipment. KitKat is owned by Nestlé, which said 413,793 bars went missing on March 28th after leaving a factory in Italy and heading for Poland, where they were set for shipments across Europe. A puppy with a staggering will to live, opened people's heartstrings and wallets. Pasadena Humane is raising money for his care after he came in with devastating injuries including a dislocated jaw and most of his nose was gone. "Peanut" never gave up and neither do the vetenarians that are caring for him. A goal was set for $7,000 to cover some of his care, but so far $23,000 has been collected. 4/4/1776 After a successful siege of Boston, General George Washington begins marching his unpaid soldiers from their headquarters in Cambridge, Mass, to New York in anticipation of a British invasion. In a letter to the president of Congress, General Washington wrote of his intentions to march to NY, and expressed his frustration with Congress for not sending enough money to pay his troops. Washington wrote, "I heartily wish the money had arrived sooner, and the Militia might have been paid as soon as their time of Service expired." The Continental Congress' inability to promptly pay and adequately supply its soldiers persisted throughout the war and continued as a subject of debate following the peace at Yorktown. Two major financial crises marked the birth of the new nation. First, Congress started paying soldiers with promises of western lands instead of currency - the same lands they also promised to Indian allies. Secondly, Congress' inability to pay expenses, even after winning the war, convicted conservative patriots that the Articles of Confederation needed to be overthrown and draft the Constitution of the United States. The constitution and its three branches of government had more authority to raise funds and manage the new nations finances.
