Our capital’s political structures are designed to be shaped by NIMBYs with the sharpest elbows - hence why London’s wealthiest area, where those with the sharpest elbows live, are often the most dead. The same structural issues that hold back the West End, are now holding back London’s hip East End too. Several years ago, Hackney enacted brutal licensing restrictions on venues in the borough, for example.
