It’s World Health Day! CPSO is committed to this year’s theme, “Together for health. Stand with science,” by relying on the latest scientific evidence to inform our policies, which protect Ontarians and support physicians and physician assistants in their practices. For example, the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) for Clinical Office Practice policy helps registrants implement IPAC practices safely and effectively, in line with best practices set by Public Health Ontario. Finishing your postgraduate training soon? Residents can get a head start by applying for Independent Practice three to four months before completing their training. 💡This means you don’t need your final certification exam results from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians Canada to apply. However, your registration certificate will only be issued once you’ve met all eligibility requirements, including completing your core specialty training and passing all required exams. 📝Heads up! On April 13, CPSO will begin renewing postgraduate education certificates for trainees continuing their postgraduate training. To begin this process, your postgraduate medical education office will directly notify CPSO of the new appointment through a formal letter of appointment (LOA). Are you beginning your residency on July 1, 2026? Let’s explore the steps to obtain your postgraduate education licence before training begins. First, CaRMS will notify CPSO in the spring once you’ve been matched and accepted into a postgraduate training program. Then, your postgraduate medical education office will send CPSO a formal letter of appointment. Individuals and their families face many difficult decisions when confronted with end-of-life care decisions. In Canada, medical assistance in dying (MAID) is one option available to those experiencing intolerable suffering from a grievous and incurable medical condition. This option allows eligible individuals to choose to end their life with the support of a doctor or nurse practitioner. To ensure this service is provided safely and respectfully, we have developed the Advice to the Profession: Medical Assistance in Dying for registrants. This guidance covers important topics including discussing MAID with patients, handling MAID requests, assessing capacity, and ensuring appropriate safeguards. On International Women’s Day, we’re leaning into this year’s theme: Give to Gain. CPSO gives by sharing resources that support registrants in providing safe, inclusive, and accessible health services, as well as resources that promote physician and physician assistant wellness.
