So. Did you know that sometimes wild birds will crawl down toilet vent pipes and get stuck in your plumbing? When my toilet started flushing very slowly, “starling” was not on my list of things that I considered possible causes. Snaking that out was… unpleasant.

It’s March break so my kids are getting to sleep in. Maisie, having woken up about 20 minutes ago, just told me her goal today is to take a nap. I can get behind this plan.

Learning today that a nursing colleague who recognized my terror doing Obstetrics during internship and helped me every step of the way is not expected to live out the year. Every time one of my educators moves on a piece of me goes with them. 😔

@TheSGEM @DennisRenMD Knowing what I do of the legal system as a non-lawyer with an interest in it, the adversarial court system is a terrible place for deciding medical accuracy. But matters like this are fine being decided in courts so long as they are impartial, which is a problem sometimes.

I’ve seen ppl point to the courts to support their position on a medical claim. I wonder if they will accept this court decision? I look at the data to inform my positions rather than rely on the legal system for determining the truth of a medical claim. thehill.com/policy/healthc…

@alandrummond2 Trauma centres went to accepting patients 24/7/365 with an on-call service & recorded access (CrtiCall). This helped with timely access to critical care. Could something similar help with people having the most serious psychological trauma? @OntariosDoctors @CAEP_Docs

I chose EM because I wanted to be the light in the house of medicine, always on and seeing anyone, anytime, for anything. The ED is a place where science, uncertainty & critical thinking come together in real time to help patients when they need it most. ⁦⁦@CAEP_Docs

@SteveRyanCP24 Which, to me, makes it even worse that parole is even a possibility. The CVBR requires all parts of the criminal justice system to consider the safety of the victim. The offender has done nothing to mitigate the risk he poses her, & she cannot hide from him, but this is ignored.

@SteveRyanCP24 She survived because of the quick actions of a neighbour and her partner (now husband) not due to any failure on the part of the offender. Worth noting the man who tried to kill her will always have access to her home address & contact info because she has children with his son.

Attempted murder is essentially a failed murder. The only difference is that the victim survived. I’ve always struggled with the leniency we sometimes see in sentencing, it can feel like the system is rewarding failure.

@SteveRyanCP24 @katebrothers_ In May 2023, 3 days before a family court trial, the former father in law of Dr. Julie Woods stabbed her nearly to death. He was convicted of attempted murder and is up for parole in May & will likely get it. The courts too often treat family violence as inevitable or excusable.

IMO intimate partner violence is still not treated with the same seriousness as other violent crimes. Too often it’s framed as a private matter, and the sentences reflect that. I also reject, ‘crime of passion’. This phrase is used far too often & it suggests that we as men cannot accept rejection. Crime of Passion=Murder full stop.

@SteveRyanCP24 When abuse is treated as a relationship dispute instead of a risk pattern, decisions about bail, child custody, or contact often increase danger.

@lili_pl The confidence I’m working on. I attend monthly language exchange meetings held by the Latino Association of PEI. It’s great because there are accents from at least 5 different countries represented (Ecuador, Chile, Mexico, Colombia, & Spain usually) which helps my learning.

@CanadianKayMD Of course! I was looking the account of a Venezuelan doctor in chile, and well, it seems Md have the same jokes in any language (my parents were MDs, so I found it funny that i recognized it). But that is the point: fluency is about confidence; remember that

I have trained my instagram algorithm to be about 90% Spanish content as a way of working on understanding native speakers better. However, it is mostly clips of comedians. This is probably not the kind of language I should be learning to use…

@lili_pl I do. I’m not fluent but understand well enough, and a lot of the cultural jokes (most of these comedians are from Latin America) are things I’m familiar with anyway through various exposures like other media and Latino friends.
