This morning, #CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett delivered remarks at the Opening Ceremony of the Caribbean Energy Week 2026 in Paramaribo, Suriname 🇸🇷 🕊️ Dr. Barnett opened with heartfelt condolences on the passing of former Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi, reflecting on his leadership during CARICOM’s pivotal engagements. The Caribbean Community (#CARICOM) is deeply saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of H.E. Chandrikapersad Santokhi, who served as the ninth President of the Republic of Suriname 🇸🇷 from 2020 to 2025. The former President represented his country with distinction in the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community serving as Chairman from July to December 2022. During the Forty-Third Regular Meeting of the Conference in Paramaribo, President Santokhi dealt decisively with matters related to the expansion of the list of professions to be included for the skills certificate under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), the action to be taken by the Community in relation to Haiti and the development of the CARICOM Industrial Policy among others. The Community conveys heartfelt condolences to the Government and People of the Republic of Suriname, his wife and other members of his family and his political colleagues. The Community has lost a dedicated regionalist. May his soul Rest in Peace.

💼Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) has described the adoption by the 80th UN General Assembly of the Resolution designating the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans as the Gravest Crime Against Humanity, as a “historic, landmark decision.” 📍The Resolution was championed by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, who leads on reparatory justice in the African Union. 🗒️It was presented for adoption at an annual special sitting of the UN General Assembly to mark the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade on 25 March at the UN Headquarters in New York. 👊🏿The Resolution was adopted with a majority vote of 123 in favour, 3 against and 52 abstentions. 👥Today, #CARICOM Ministers with the responsibility for the Environment and Sustainable Development held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Fatih Ekmekçi, General Director of Environmental Impact Assessment, Permits and Supervision of Türkiye, on the margins of the 124th Special Meeting of COTED – Environment and Sustainable Development. 💼Discussions focused on: • Advancing climate resilience across vulnerable states • Enhancing international cooperation and climate financing mechanisms • Aligning priorities in preparation for COP31 (9–20 November 2026), to be hosted by Türkiye 🇹🇷 🌱 With several CARICOM Member States classified as Small Island Developing States (SIDS), CARICOM Ministers underscored the Region’s acute vulnerability to climate impacts and the urgent need for equitable climate action. 🤝 The engagement reinforced CARICOM’s commitment to working with international partners, including Türkiye, to deliver meaningful outcomes for the Region at COP31. #CARICOM #ClimateAction #COP31 #SIDS #SustainableDevelopment #COTED #Partnerships #Resilience

📌On 25 March 2026, technical experts from across the Region gathered in Georgetown, Guyana 🇬🇾 for the Third Meeting of the Technical Advisory Group of #CARICOM Institutions on Ocean Matters (TAGCOM). 💼Held ahead of the 124th Special Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) on Environment and Sustainable Development, this one-day working session focused on strengthening regional coherence for ocean governance through the review and advancement of the draft CARICOM Ocean Policy (COP). 💬 “This session enabled TAGCOM to deliver targeted, high-value inputs that will shape the finalisation of the Policy and inform the development of its Implementation Plan,” stated Mr. Kareem Sabir, Deputy Programme Manager, Sustainable Development, CARICOM Secretariat. 🗝️Key objectives of the meeting included: 🔹 Technical Validation: Reviewing the Policy’s vision, goals and strategic pillars 🔹 Policy Alignment: Harmonising with frameworks such as the Caribbean Community Common Fisheries Policy (CCCFP) and the Eastern Caribbean Regional Ocean Policy (ECROP) 🔹 Implementation Mapping: Defining institutional roles and priority actions for the first 24 months 🤝The meeting was chaired by the CARICOM Secretariat with support from UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (UKFCDO). 🌐 Other participating institutions included the @oecscommission, @CaribFisheries , @CARDIcaribbean , @CARPHA1 , @CCREEE_GNSEC , @CImpacs , @CTO and @UWI_StAugustine ➡️ The outcomes will inform the second draft of the CARICOM Ocean Policy and strengthen a unified regional approach to managing the Caribbean Sea. ⚙️ TAGCOM was established to provide coordinated, ecosystem-based technical guidance, continues to serve as a central “engine” driving the implementation of the Policy. #CARICOM #TAGCOM #OceanGovernance #BlueEconomy #Sustainability #ClimateResilience #Guyana
