Today, I received Ms. Maymuchka Lauriston, Deputy Regional Representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and Head of its East Africa Office, and her delegation for a productive discussion on strengthening Somalia–OHCHR cooperation. Our discussions focused on implementing UN Human Rights Council Resolution A/HRC/RES/60/28, including the development of the 2026–2027 Action Plan and accelerating the establishment of an OHCHR office in Somalia. This engagement reflects our continued progress in advancing human rights, including the establishment of the Independent National Human Rights Commission—a historic milestone in strengthening accountability and institutional capacity.

Children don’t just show talent, they live it. You can see it in the way they dance without fear, sing without apology, and take the stage like they were born for it. Today at Toto Kreatives Festival, the Talent & Ability Masterclass by Arigatou International became that rare space where children are reminded that their gifts aren’t “cute”… they’re powerful. From voice projection and stage presence to confidence-building and storytelling, this masterclass helped young performers discover something bigger than technique: the courage to be seen. Because when you give children a stage, they don’t just perform. They grow. They rise. They lead. 📍 Sarit Expo Centre 🎭 Talent & Ability Masterclass — Arigatou International #TotoKreativesFestival #MtotoNews #ArigatouInternational #ChildCreatives

Together, we’re building a movement where children are not spectators; they’re co-architects of the SDGs. Let’s build the future WITH them, not for them. Watch this space as we race towards 2030!

Great energy this morning as we hosted the SDG Academy for Children by Arigatou International! The Academy is empowering children to design real solutions that can be implemented and scaled, and with only 5 years to 2030, this couldn’t be more timely. #Raceto2030

On March 11, 2025, @humanrightstz and @ten_met jointly held a press conference to address the alarming rise in student injuries and deaths due to corporal punishment in schools. On February 26, 2025, media reports revealed the tragic death of Mhoja Maduhu, a Form Two student at Mwasamba Secondary School in Busega District, Simiyu Region. Mhoja allegedly died after being severely caned by his teacher, Salim Chogogwe, for failing to complete a class group assignment. Similarly, on March 4, 2025, a second-grade student, Khudhaifa Salim Hamisi, from Msufini Primary School in Dar es Salaam, suffered a broken arm after being brutally beaten by a teacher. Despite reports to the Mbande Police Station, no action has been taken. Between January and February 2025, the national child helpline (116), managed by C-SEMA, recorded 169 cases of child abuse, including 52 incidents of severe physical punishment. @humanrightstz and @ten_met urge the Ministry of Education to amend the 1978 Education Act to explicitly ban corporal punishment and promote alternative disciplinary measures that respect children's rights and welfare. The Ministry should also issue an immediate circular prohibiting excessive punishment in schools. We call for strict legal action against perpetrators and justice for victims to reinforce that violence against students is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. #EndCorporalpunishment #LHRC

Nairobi continues to bolster its position as a financial and diplomatic powerhouse in Africa, attracting global attention with its strong financial infrastructure, international connectivity, and a high concentration of multilateral institutions. In a productive meeting with Mr. @volker_turk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, on the margins of the ongoing high-level segment of the 58th Session Human Rights Council in Geneva, I highlighted Nairobi’s pivotal role in diplomacy. With one of the highest densities of embassies and international organizations on the continent, the city has rightfully earned its reputation as a “peace capital,” hosting key regional summits and mediation efforts. The UN’s decision to establish a Multi-Country Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nairobi further reinforces the city’s status as a hub for international cooperation. This initiative, only the second of its kind, enhances efficiency in delivering coordinated development programs across multiple nations. By hosting this office, Kenya strengthens its leadership in promoting and protecting human rights, both at home and across the region. This aligns with our constitutional and international commitments, advancing collaborations with institutions like the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to fortify our human rights framework and foster a more just and inclusive society. Despite global challenges in safeguarding human rights, Kenya remains steadfast in its commitment to dignity, justice, and fundamental freedoms. Our proactive leadership continues to shape a stronger, more resilient human rights ecosystem in Africa.
